Your main bass, and why?

I do lug out the 4080 for a night when I think my shoulder needs some punishment. :)

Some fine day I'll have a 4003 modded to a 5 string for a main squeeze, and probably a passive Jazz or MM 5er for a backup or change of pace.

Carvin Bunny Brunel 6 string FL. Main reasons it's my main:
- balanced on the strap. Stays in 45 deg. position by itself and no need to hold onto it when playing.
- unlined fingerboard. Easier to intonate because it forces me to listen and not rely on lines.
- humbucker PU correctly placed for me in bridge position (about 3" from saddles)
- narrow string spacing at bridge (16mm) makes plucking easier for me
- active and passive modes available (plays fine with no batteries in it, just pull the volume knob)
- smooth, hi-fi sound with little tone of its own. not stuck with a characteristic tone, can shape sound electronically a lot easier than my other basses. Very good quality preamp.
- 6 strings for extended range.
- very quiet, very little hiss and buzz.

Don't play my other basses anymore so technically I have no backup.

Right now i only have one bass besides my unplayable first bass, its going to be sold tomorrow possibly so i cant submit it as my main bass, but i will be back with a main bass soon:)

How does the P+MM sound? What balance do you use between the two pickups? I am modding my Squier Affinity P with a MM. I am not sure whether I plan on using it as two basses in one body, by soloing one or the other pickup, or if I will find a nice mix of the two.

my basses just depend really... with the variety of bands I normally play/tour with, it tends to change some!

Go-to #1

1977 USA Fender Precision- nuff said really... a battle-ax of a bass, and overall, my favorite tones come out of this bass!

USA G&L L2000- great tonal varieties, I think this bass is amazing for harder edged music.


and if I have to pick a five string-

MTD Kingston Heir-- love the tones with an Aguilar OPB-1 Preamp. neck is sooo comfy!

My main bass, unless it sells tomorrow. fender body, rio grande pick ups, CTS pots with a big ole orangedrop capacitor and a mighty mite neck, not a bad bass but not my thing. With a new band about to start i need to get 2 good basses soon for gigs and differnet tunings

i have 2 main basses
1. bee basses nine string stinger, which i use for tapping and solo stuff
2. conklin gtbd-7, which i use for just about everything else. its very versatile, and i put an aftermarket bridge for wider string spacing on it.
my back up basses are a schecter custom stiletto 5 sting, and an ibanez btb 4 sting. the only reason that these arent in my main section, is cuz i have mainly moved on to extended range basses.

Where'd you get the bridge at? I'd love to get a little wider spacing on mine. It's the closest thing to a complaint I have with it.

+1. I play in churches mostly, but I don't really worry about my Squier Jazz V. It's easily replaceable and is really a high-quality instrument for the price. And about the B, as posted above, I didn't think I was going to be a believer either. Now that I've started using the Jazz V exclusively, a 4-string neck feels almost uncomfortable. Good times. Plus, it's just loads of fun to hit that B!!!

I am splitting time between two main basses and a third "secondary".
I'm playing 90% fretless and the two mains are both fretless sweethearts.

Main bass 1 - Zon Sonus Special. Incredibly sweet, lyrical bass. This gets playing time in my original singer-songwriter gig, where I'm serving as both bass and melodic accompaniment.

Main bass 2 - Ibanez Gary Willis (GWB1) with ACG preamp.
This bass is just so growly and sweet-nasty. She gets main playing time in Funkranomicon (my funk band) and on R&B gigs.

Finally, in the funk band there are some songs that are best served by slapping. I personally prefer slapping on a fretted 4 than a fretless 5, so I have an ATK that is getting a bit of playing time as well.

In all honesty, the only move I would make would me a trade or another P bass for my Brubaker. But that's just a thought, as I'm thoroughly enjoying all of my basses as of now.
