Your Mandatory Pedals.

My top 3:

1) Octave Pedal ... Just switched from EBS to pre-release MXR (April 09)
2) Envelope Filter/Wah ... A prefer the Boss AW-3 Dynamic Filter and the Nano Bassballs (which comes with a fuzz option)
3) Chorus or Flanger ... personal preference ... i use both for different gigs ... MXR for both

I also recommend a tuner pedal with a mute option ... i'll sometimes sacrifice the chorus/flanger for this.

Guys, I was looking through my Chili Peppers collection and was listening to 21st Century on the Stadium Arcadium: Mars album and want that tone!

Im thinking I might go:
1. EHX Q-Tron mini? The compact one.
2. Some type of wah.
3. and an Octave. I was watching a Larry Graham video with him using one... Yum..

I'm not trying to be cute but the only *mandatory* pedals I'd list are
1) A good tuner (Peterson or equivalent)
2) A good DI box (Radial, Countryman or equivalent)

Everything else could be lived without imho

Personally, the Flea-filter sound that gets me all hot and bothered is Sir Psycho Sexy, but the Q-tron should be able to get reasonable close to either.

You're probably going to want one of the "funkier" wah's--someone else can help you out with that.

As for an Octaver, well, I use a whammy, so I'm mostly clueless about that sort of stuff. :p


As for a DI, it's a box you can use to run your signal to a mixing board. That's the vastly simplified version,

That song is awesome. And I use my Micro Q-Tron for it. It does that tone...fairly well.

The Dunlop 105q is generally regarded as the standard funk wah. It's a solid pedal, but I went with the Ibanez Weeping Demon instead. Not as thick sounding (though on some settings it's close) but more versatile and it seemed like it had a better bypass but I didn't A/B them so I can't say for sure.

I don't currently have a wah, but the clips of the Wilson 12 position wah has made me think I'd go that route if I got another one.

Edit: Looks like DoS and I posted at the same time. One plus for the 105q is that it is the wah that Tim Commerford and Flea uses live. One negative is that I think Flea's effects sound like poop live. :)

If Flea and Timmy use it, then its the pedal for me.

So the Qtron and Dunlop are my main priorities. What about an octave pedal?

OR is that pointless with a wah pedal?

Not only did we post at the same time, we talked about the same pedal. Granted, I only went 1/3, but then again I've never been one for a Wah.

As for an octaver, I recommend the MXR Blue Box. ;)


In all seriousness, the OC-2 and the Micro Pog get a lot of praise around here, but I think it depends on what you'd be using an octaver for--do you think you'll be adding a lower octave or a higher octave?

The Qtron and the Dunlop are the two that might be considered redundant by some as they do somewhat similar things. The difference is the envelope of the Qtron is controlled by your playing dynamics and the wah is controlled manually.

For an octaver the OC-2 is a good one though you'd have to buy it used as it's been discontinued. The OC-3 isn't bad. The EBS Octabass is worth checking out too. The POG tracks the best but is more digital sounding.

Isnt the MXR bass octave deluxe coming out somewhat soon (april?) that also looks very promising. Id also say dont go for the qtron and the dunlop 105q at the same time, consider both eventually (and try other brands of both), but if you can only afford 2 or 3 pedals for now consider either one of those and some type of dist/fuzz and an octave, or even a compressor. then again i am more of a dirt/fuzz person, though i do use a micro qtron and an ibanez wah as-well.
