Your Mandatory Pedals.

I don't know if you got on answer on this, but a DI is basically a box that will take an unbalanced signal and run it balanced to the soundboard for FOH (Front of House...PA basically) and monitoring duties. There are some pedals such as the Sansamp BDDI that pull double duty as a distortion preamp and a DI.
I took a Sansamp BDDI Programmable on a gig and the FOH engineer was stoked on it.
For my 3 to keep in line with the thread
1.) Boss LMB-1 Limiter (prolly be replaced with a more musical compressor)
2.) Boss SD-2 Dual Overdrive (or some other overdrive/distortion/fuzz yet to be determined)
3.) ToadWorks Redux
In all fairness this really only leaves out my Digitech Synth Wah and the only pedal that has a guaranteed spot (I'm still an FX noob) on my board is the Redux.
It's no good, I can't maneuver!
Jordasch, you might want to hold off on the octaver 'till you get the chance to try out the new MXR double octave.

I wouldn't call it garbage. DOD made some pretty good stuff.
No, no Screech. You read that wrong. In a previous post I spoke about the pedal being my dads friends throw away box. So I grabbed it. Threw a new battery in, works great.

It's late I'm i'm slightly drunk. Throw that DOD in a blend looper like the LS-2 to make it have more bottom.

I like this little pedal, and just like my first bass I plan to keep it forever. Especially since it has background, I didnt just buy it.
What about the Bassballs? Whats the difference between it and the Qtron?
My three faves are: Blueberry, CP9, & Q-tron. Of course, as many have pointed out, there's really no such thing as a mandatory pedal.
The Q-tron is a single envelope filter which is much more adjustable. It does up, down, high, low, low pass, band pass, high pass, has peak and gain knobs. The Bass Balls has one knob that controls sensitivity or range plus the distortion switch. It has two filters, so to speak, that work together and basically is a one trick pony. It's a pretty cool trick but it's really never subtle or flexible.

For me at the moment it's just my PW tuner, but I'm talking with a guy about a custom fuzz pedal...
I don't use 'em at all at every gig, but for me (and not in any particular order):
EHX Big Muff (ordinary black Russki job)
Some sort of Filter (usually a Wah, or else an envelope filter of some description)
SansAmp Bass Driver DI.

I really have no idea what those are, or what they do..
A compressor is basically an automatic volume control. It takes sounds above a certain level (threshold) and makes them quieter. This is useful for evening out dynamics such as going between fingerstyle and slap without a big change in volume, or taming the big volume spikes that can come out of pedals like envelope filters.
As for your list, I mentioned this before, but if I was going to only have three pedals, I wouldn't have a wah AND an envelope filter. That's not to say it's a bad idea, and many people have both on their board, but for a very small board I just think it's redundant.
