It was Todd Helton's last career home game last night and it was quite an emotional time at Coors Field. I wasn't there, but we had the TV on. Helton got standing ovations with every AB and the video features were fantastic. He is going to be sorely missed here in Denver. Clint Hurdle's message to the fans really stuck with me:

"For 17 years you have been blessed with Todd Helton playing for your hometown team. He has not only represented you with intense focus, grit and selflessness, he has also given you a career of ‘remember the game Helton hit…’ which can be handed down generationally! Don’t be sad it’s over, Denver. Be glad it happened."

I wish Todd nothing but the best in this new chapter of his life. I hope he has many long horse back rides with his wife and daughters on their ranch. I really hope to see him back with the Rockies again, in a coaching role or assistant manager. If we can't have him on the first base bag, hopefully we can have him next to it :) I'll give him a couple years, at least. He's got some beautiful, sweet girls who have been short-changed on the Daddy/ hubby department for too long. Then, I better be hearing talk of him coming back in one form or another! ;)

I've only been a Rockies fan for about 3 years. That has been nowhere near enough time for me to fully appreciate all that Mr. Helton has done yet long enough for me to see his humble nature, devotion to the game, and outstanding role model he's been for all the rookies to have come through the Rockies organization.

LA, enjoy having #17 on the field at Dodgers Stadium for this final series!

Yep. No roids, class act and a borderline HOF'r. I heard on ESPN yesterday that among his career numbers, there is only one other guy named DiMaggio, who hit so many (all categories - 2B, HR's and more) in so many different categories.

I missed the pregame ceremonies, but watched most of the game. Congratulations to Todd Helton on a fine career and to the Rockies and their fans for a classy heartfelt farewell.

This is my favorite use for white ash and sugar maple.

My dad, who's been a Rockies fan since the mid-70s, went to this game. I need to catch up with him tonight and see how it was from his vintage point. Helton is super-cool in my book. Just did his thing remarkably well, toiling away in relative obscurity on a small-market team.

On the flip side: Count me among those happy to see the Yankees miss the playoffs.:D

That the Yankees hung in there as long as they did with the injuries that they had was pretty impressive as was their streak of going to playoffs. As much as I love to hate them; I have to give them that respect.

They will be the most interesting off-season story. If they stick to a payroll of $190,000,000 - I don't know how they will improve that much given the money already committed to Jeter, ARod, Texeira, CC, Wells, Soriano and Suzuki (130M but they are getting money to help with Soriano and Wells) and the money that would be needed to resign Cano, Hughes and Granderson and the money to their arbitration-eligibles.

The Dodgers gave the Red Sox a financial bailout last year but they also got two productive players in Gonzales and Crawford who helped LA win a division. I don't know if a similar trade is possible for the Yankee high-paid stars.

I don't know how the Yankees are going to get back into the thick of things, but I suspect that they will figure out a way.

But...I wish Mariano Rivera wasn't retiring yet. He clearly still has the stuff - 44sv this year with a 2.00 era. One of the all time greats and best closer baseball has ever seen.

I feel pretty much the same way about Helton...

Sure he has his games where his back acts up, but he still performs with Gold Glove accuracy at First the majority of the time. His average may not be the best, but how many other 40 year olds are still belting out homers and doubles on such a regular basis?
