Okay so we are into 2015, and I am pondering what my goals for this year musically speaking are... I have a pretty well defined idea of what I want to do. And it got me to thinking what other folks are doing.

What/s your plan / goals for your music in 2015?

For me it is..

#1. Continue with my self study books / practice. Complete the courses. I have 3 of them I am working right now. "Bass Basics" and "Rock Bass Basics" (Warner Music), and "Play Bass Today" (Hal Leonard). I am about 75% through Bass Basics and 25% through Rock Bass Basics...
#2. Pay some bills off, finish remodeling the office / music room so I have better space to play in...
#3. Pick up a Digital Piano for my wife.
#4. Get both of us into instructor led classes.
#5. Get me into a more active jamming / weekend warrior type band / praise and worship band situation...

Find a band with people who take it seriously as a business but want to have some fun and play good music with no drama. Where the drummer shows up for all rehearsals and gigs and the guitar player has learned his part and doesn't throw a hissy fit and throw things.
But that was my goal for 2014, 2013, 2012, ... 1988, 1987, .... 1971,...

Learn to read music. I'm off to a good start. I just read the LC transcription on another post!

Do you have a plan for getting there? Maybe some classes, or beginner / intermediate bass education programs / DVDs you will be using?

That is actually one of the first things in Play Bass Today Book. I am at the point I can read music, but slowly... I need to get to the point where reading music is like reading English to me...

Interesting comment... What do you mean by a musician that plays bass rather than just a bass player? Are you wanting to learn other instruments / vocal as well?

I have been playing bass for a while, but I have been mostly self-taught. I have taken lessons before but I have never found a bass instructor to take lessons from before. It was always someone who taught bass, too. I have studied theory on my own and worked through some workbooks on it. I have played with other people and been in some bands. My focus has been pretty narrow, mostly on classic rock, southern rock, and blues.

I feel like there is something missing and that I have all of this scattered knowledge and skills that need to be pulled together. I have been shopping around looking for someone who could help me to do that. I found an instructor whose primary instrument is bass, both electric and upright. He has a degree in Jazz Perfomance and teaches music, not just technique. I want to learn more about music and how to get it out of me and through my bass.

That's a great answer! Very much more or less my end goal... I'm a few steps behind, doing the self taught thing right now, getting my technique down. I already have a teacher selected. The school is a bit of a drive for me (over an hour commute) so that makes frequent classes tough, and I want to be ready for it... There are other teachers closer by, but this guy is good, with a top notch cirriculum. I just googled him and found he has an online study cirriculum somewhat akin to Scotts Bass Lessons, might be worth checking out...

I have no interest in his site, and haven't tried it yet, so use at your own discretion...
