Your opinion on this body shape ....

I've been trying to come up with something that looked classic, but wasn't just a straight fender copy. This body shape is what I have come up with. This is just a rough cut in cypress wood, no real work has been done to it yet except some routing. And yes, I purposefully slanted the jazz bass pickups like that...it helps even out the string to string tone. No contouring or anything has been done yet either.


Anyway, what are your thoughts about that this body shape?

Roundover has now been added, contouring has not been done yet ...still deciding about that. Here's a current photo ....

I like it

I am a fan of conventional body shapes ( with the Explorer as an exception as I love that shape :D) .... so I appreciate what you are doing here: Its basically a slightly offset P ( a P with J Tendencies, if you will :D) with a short lower horn - but you have somehow managed to make it original looking which is quite a feat (and I like your design over other P-derivatives, like the Sire P7)

So, I like it...but it took a second for me to like it, does that make sense?

I also dig the offset Js with the bass end favoring the bridge (Like "Reverse P Pickups", this always makes better articulation sense for players like myself that prefer "fresh rounds/ harmonic structure")

Got some ideas for you if youre interested

Thank so for the kind words , I'm glad you dig it ! It's definitely difficult time coming up with something that is classic yet still at least a little bit fresh.

I think you got the strap pin in "the right place" with respect to the 12th fret. :thumbsup:

I like how, at the top, it looks like it might be an offset body, but it never really develops into that. :thumbsup:

I'm not so sure about the bottom cutaway. It looks a little "stubby." On the other hand, if you slim it up a little bit, it will look like a 4-94. Maybe improve the access to the 20th fret a little (for cosmetic reasons - I don't think that fret is very important playing wise for many players)?

That's all personal preference. If you were shooting for classic but different, I think you did well.

Looks great! If it were my project, I'd probably play with a bit of asymmetry on the bottom... I know it makes it impossible to lean against things in lieu of a stand, but I think it'd take it just that much farther from a P-shape while keeping a very classic vibe. Something not identical, but in the same spirit as what Dingwall or FBass do on the bottom ends of their basses.

But if not, it's still good looking :thumbsup:
