If it’s nitro you’ll get plenty of real wear pretty soon.

Totally depends on how you treat your instruments. I have a few nitro guitars and they show zero wear after many years of playing.

My most worn instrument has a poly finish. But I didn't create the wear, since it's pretty old and I recently bought it.

Put some screws in the neck mount holes , tie a rope to it , and drag it around the yard or gravel driveway until you get the amount of aging you like.

I have a 70's p bass neck that I love and have had on a few different bodies now. It has a nice patina and a few dings that look cool. I try not to be too picky about looks but I alway felt it looked out of place on bodies with a new glossy poly finish and always kind of wanted a vintage body to match it. This body came up in the classifieds and I bought it. I admit I had my beer goggles on at the time. Looking at it now I'm not sure I like the relic job. I like the yellowing and aging of the paint but do the chips around the sides look a little to deliberate and fake? As if someone purposefully went at it with a set of keys or something. Anyway let me know what you think. Here's a pic and a link to the ad:
