Your prayers are requested...

An update, for those who may be interested:

J has had another unfortunate break in the rods in his spinal column.

Both of the rods are broken this time. One is almost sticking out of the skin, the other is broken towards the inside. Either way...both breaks are obviously dangerous.

So surgery (again...what else?!) is on Tuesday, July 27th. The surgeon will be replacing both of the rods (cobalt/chrome) with new Titanium rods for more flexibility. Additionally, he'll be going through his pelvic area and will be performing a minor fusion to allow bones to continue to grow while the alignment is taking place.

Don't know how long this will take and how much recovery time is needed, but I'll keep you updated. I haven't been able to post pics previously because our digital camera was dropped twice, and I haven't been able to replace it. I will try taking some pics with my Blackberry and will post them after the surgery.

Since the last surgery, we got a new poodle, doctor recommended to keep J's anxiety level down. Frosty (puppy) has been a great addition to the family! He's 6 months now.

Your prayers will be very much appreciated!

I no longer pray (I have my reasons) but I do hope that Jeremy pulls through surgery and makes a speedy progress to full health.

Rudy,

I am a pastor and will be praying for your son! My contact numbers are good 24 hours if you need them I can give them to you too. Also, since you are in Orange County, I have a ton of pastor friends in that area. If you need any kind of pastoral visits, I have no doubt any one of them would be more than happy to come and pray with your family and minister to you guys in any way they can.
Let me know!
God bless,
Jay

I got into this thread late and have scanned it before making this post.

Your family and son have gone through much physical and emotional pain....My heart was raised and sunk with each post....I have 3 beautiful children and having any one of them go through this would be difficult and painful for me...

major prayers for your family and your son....I hope the recent surgery was a success and he can "relax" a little in the faith of knowing that his healer is with him.

peace and prayers...Doug

Hello everyone!

Thank you all for your prayers, good vibes, and kind wishes!

Jeremy's surgery turned out to be a success! It was a long 5 hour surgery.

It was also his 5th corrective surgery due to a break in the instrumentation.

The orthopedic surgeon had a difficult time removing all of the old instrumentation.
However, he was able to perform the spinal fusion to allow the bone to fuse with the instruments he placed in his back. The idea is he tried to correct as much as he could so that J grows as straight as possible. It won't be perfectly straight, but it is better than the opposite. He must also wear a body brace and orthotics for his legs to assist him in balancing himself. The tough news here is that J may not grow to be very tall.

I still have "high" hopes for him (pun intended). His trunk is about 85% developed and his legs and feet should still grow some. How much is in God's hands. (Hey, I'm 5'2" and I turned out to be okay...I think...) :D

As of right now, he has been discharged from the hospital, and is comfortably resting at home. (He was discharged this afternoon.)

As part of his medical issues, he will continue to need urgent medical care on a regular basis because he was born with Spina Bifida, Scoliosis, and a Neurogenic bladder. Add to that he is unable to control his sphincter muscle and needs to have his intestines cleaned out daily to avoid accidents. He always needs to wear a diaper and needs daily cleaning through his urethra for the same.

I've never mentioned this before, but our family went through a lot when he was first born and was placed in intensive care. My wife was devastated that she could not bring home a "perfectly healthy" baby. He needed immediate spinal surgery to remove a myelomenengicele that had grown of the base of his spine at three days old. (He was born via C-section of course.) Needless to say, we were worried he would need a shunt to drain fluids/water from his brain. (Hydrocephalus). Thank God that wasn't necessary.

Since then we have only made it through with prayers and the hopes that God has a special purpose for Jeremy. Academically he's as sharp as a tack and he believes that he will go to college on a sports scholarship. He wants to be a soccer star.

He has amazed us by being able to run, play, and act as if nothing were wrong. I used to joke that I hoped he would be able to run and I wouldn't be able to catch him...it's almost true!!!! Although he walks, runs, and plays with many "limitations" he has taught me the value of taking nothing for granted. He has never once said he can't do something. He receives physical therapy at school and has done very well with working on improving his motor skills.

I don't know why I am sharing this. I pray that perhaps this recovery of his will be a continued encouragement to myself and a new one to others sharing the profound challenge of raising a child with special needs. Even when we have been "energy depleted" and economically challenged (I was laid off last year) we still are encouraged by seeing how Jeremy has come along!

I will try to post some pictures as soon as I can, I promise!

Cheers!

I'm very glad to hear that the surgery went well. Thank you for sharing more of the story, your son sounds like a great kid. Continued prayers and good thoughts to you and yours.

Rudyboy98,

It sounds to me like you have an incredible, remarkable child.

It never ceases to amaze me how those with the greatest challenges can become the greatest achievers. Obviously I'm talking about your son, but I think that applies to you and your wife, too.

Keep up the good work.

...Thanks again to everyone for outpouring your love, kindness, and support...

Wow! Friends from Australia, Denmark, and all over!!! Unbelievable what the Net can do!

On a lighter note...believe it or not...Jeremy is already walking around (slowly) on his own!

I hope he doesn't decide to play soccer this week...we don't need him to actually need more surgery....(argh!) I am probably more frustrated than he is!

But I digress! Thanks to everyone...I'll post more pics when I can get my hands on a camera...!
