Your prettiest bass

I know I'm in the minority on this, but bass players are friggin' weird. Do surgeons ever think about their prettiest scalpel? Carpenters about their prettiest hammer? It's a tool, just use it!
If it were "just a tool", it wouldn't come in so many different colors, shapes, materials, finishes and we'd all be playing sunburst P Basses. How dull would that be?

Plus, music can be a hobby, art form, career, etc. I don't see surgeons cutting people for fun and relaxation, except in horror movies.

My pretties. The fretted I bought new 11 years ago. When I got it I was working as a barista, and to me the burl looks like spilled coffee from the neck to the rest of the body. Whomever decided on that cut for the top is a genius. The fretless I got used through TALKBASS 2 years ago, it has as the seller put it 'one of the nicest Zebrano tops'. I agree.

I guarantee you that if you put your bass in a case at the end of a gig and do a poll, 99% of the audience won't even be able to tell you what color it was. Try it. And I'm guessing your woodworkers friends aren't posting pics of their tools no matter how "pretty" they are.
 :roflmao: bob, i totally get where you're coming from on this --- i agree with you. my POV is: looks are for kids! ;)

that said: shirley there's enough "kid" left in most of us to appreciate what our 'friends' think is beautiful --- it helps us define/appreciate our 'friends' a bit more. and just so you know where this 'friend' is coming from, i present to you what i think is my "prettiest bass" ---

I see you (maybe) in your avatar playing an upright. Assuming that's you, would you be OK if I came into your house and randomly sprayed black paint on your bass? Would it be OK if I pained gang signs on it? If not, then you care about what the thing looks like. Some of us care more than others, but I'll bet on some level you do care.

Absolutely, but a post about a "prettiest bass" makes me think making music might not be the OP's first priority.

I've played a lot of ugly instruments in my time. In fact, at least one of my current basses is borderline hideous. Still we're in a visual medium here, and there's nothing wrong with a pretty instrument. It doesn't denote not caring about music. There are people who sound amazing and carry around a single worn Peavey, and people who sound amazing who are posting pix of their gorgeous basses. Whatever floats your boat.

Frankenbass I’m in love with. ‘81 Tokai Jazzy Sound neck, ‘78ish Greco PB 750 body with original bridge pickup, brass bridge and knobs from an Ibanez Musician and chrome saddles from an old Fernandes. It’s basically the best of Matsomoku with a matching worn black headstock and body.
