Your prettiest bass

With that attitude, why not make ALL basses one solid color (let's say black or brown) and chrome hardware only. Same with cars. Maybe Henry Ford was right to make only 1 color available. It's just a tool. Use it. Drive it.

That would be fine by me. As long as sound and playability are good, I don't care what color it is.

You are right, basses are a tool. Their only purpose is to allow the musician to make music, but you got to admit, some look better than others.

Absolutely, but a post about a "prettiest bass" makes me think making music might not be the OP's first priority.

I guarantee you that if you put your bass in a case at the end of a gig and do a poll, 99% of the audience won't even be able to tell you what color it was. Try it. And I'm guessing your woodworkers friends aren't posting pics of their tools no matter how "pretty" they are.

It's part of an overall impression. Similarly, they probably won't remember the color or brand of shoes you were wearing but likely will recall if you were well dressed or not. I have had a lot of non-players comment on my Inverness Green '64 t-bird when I've gigged it and when using a polished out aluminum double bass many, many requests to take pictures with it after shows (that bass is a real conversation starter - and I've had band leaders request it clearly based on the look it lends to the band overall).
If you join some woodworkers Facebook groups you'll see plenty of tool pics. I do think guitar players and bass players are comparatively much more focused on it though, it's certainly true.
Of course, aesthetics comes after tone and playability (and it's possible to have all three).

As a longtime fine woodworker, I totally get your point, but you'd be surprised. There are boutique toolmakers making hand planes, chisels, and marking and measuring tools that are gorgeous but insanely expensive. They get pictures posted.

I don't buy any of those tools, nor do usually I post pics, as I really don't get it. ;)

A very rare exception, I did share pics of My SawStop Industrial table saw when it was brand new, as I was proud to share why a bass playing furniture maker would want all the safety tech he can get.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but bass players are friggin' weird. Do surgeons ever think about their prettiest scalpel? Carpenters about their prettiest hammer? It's a tool, just use it!

I think that you will find that other musicians on other forums have "Post Your Beautiful Insert Instrument Here Photos" threads.

Two things can be true at the same time. Instruments are tools and they are works of art.

I posted photos of my Sadowsky 24 fret with its Quilted Maple top as my prettiest bass, but it also is my best sounding and best feeling bass. So, a bass can be a valuable tool and look great at the same time. Here’s another photo just to illustrate.
