Would love to have the Sovtek again. I've been chasing that tone ever since. The Markbass stuff is by far the best Solid State stuff I've heard ever. I'll being sticking with them for the foreseeable future.

another old thread to revive!! Forgive me I'm a newer member and still finding all of these great threads.

starting in the late 70's:
Sears Silvertone amp(ugh)
Sold to buy a used Ampeg SVT blueline and Ampeg cabinet with an 18" Gauss speaker that was blown- replaced with an EV 18" speaker.
Bought a Fender Bassman 4X12 angled speaker cabinet (almost a refrigerator)(great sounding cabinet but large)
SVT stolen at a bar- bought the matching Fender Bassman 100 head (hated it-sold it back- underpowered)
Tried a Traynor bass amp head- hated it, also underpowered
Sold Fender cabinet back to original owner.
Bought a Peavey Mark IV bass head and 1X18" Black Widow cabinet (Peavey amp sucked- preamp section ok)
Had a Thiele design cabinet custom made and loaded with a 15" JBL E140
Purchased an older Crown DC300 amplifier (used Peavey as a preamp/biamp rig)(1X15 & 1X18)
Bought a Peavey refrigerator cabinet (2X10 and 2X18!!)- stolen at practice mall.
Forge ahead about 10 years...
Sold Crown and Peavey amp and 1X18 cabinet
Bought Crown Power Base II amp, ART Nightbass preamp, had a custom 2X10 cabinet made loaded with JBL E110's
Sold Nightbass (too hard to get a good sound although lots of goodies in it)
Experimented with different preamps.
Ordered a Trace Elliot GP12SM preamp (waited 6 months still back ordered for months)
Gave up and bought a Trace Elliot GP7SM preamp (solid state) (well built and quiet... but no tube growl)
Bought an Ampeg SVP Pro preamp and SWR Goliath III cabinet (sold the 2X10)
Bought an Ampeg SVP-BSP preamp (did not like)(traded back to GC for an SWR Son of Bertha cabinet)
That is my current rig.... my retirement present to myself will be an Ampeg SVT Blueline reissue with a classic refrigerator cabinet (8X10) to keep in my studio.

Always funny when you go full circle.

At one point I ended up going from an SVT/610 to a V4/B40 4x10 to an SVT/8x10, only to pick up another V4/B40. I'm swinging back now, sold the B40 again, and not really using the V4 or SVT as much.

Started out playing on a couple of Fender guitar combos.

First actual bass amp was a used Carvin RL 600 head and a Carvin RL 210 cab.

When I first started playing louder rock gigs, I added a couple of Carvin RL 1x15 cabs, which I used with or without the 210 cab in various combinations. I later upgraded the RL 600 head to the similar but higher powered RL 900 head.

Somewhere around 2005 or so I moved to a pre/power setup with a Carvin DCM series power amp and a BBE Bmax preamp, which I used with the same Carvin cabs.

Maybe 5 or so years ago I sold the Carvin 1x15s and picked up a Markbass Neo 4x10 cab, which I used with the trusty old Carvin RL 210 cab. A year or two later I picked up a second Markbass 4x10 and retired the Carvin for home use.

Over the past couple of years I updated the pre/power setup by replacing the Carvin DCM with a QSC GX5. I've also lately been using a SansAmp RPM in place of the BBE Preamp, because I seem to clip it less often at gig volume, but I imagine I'll likely keep the BBE Preamp in the rotation as I slightly prefer its tone overall.

My basic tone and approach (focusing on a clean, hi-fi, full-range solid state tone) has been largely the same, and the changes have mainly been based upon increasing reliable headroom and response in a live setting.

Illustrated with pictures I found on teh interwebz:

I started with an old Fender Bassman which I got used in 1982 or 1983 and played until a thin stream of blue smoke (accompanied by an electrical burning smell) started coming out of one of the input jacks at rehearsal one night.

f18343335da5e6153d027394a75805c1.jpg

I then bought a Laney head and 4 X 10 cabinet

laney-pro-bass-amp-xl.jpg

post-2560-1245176003.jpg

Then I got an awesome used Trace Elliot head (with working black light!) pre-mounted in a road case. I also got a TE 18" cab to pair with the Laney 10 (which I kept).

I then stupidly sold all my gear.

A few years later, I started to get into playing again, so I bought this:

But that didn't satisfy, so then I got this and have stayed with it for the last 8 years or so:

Every time I am tempted to buy a new amp, I just plug this Trace Combo back in and realize I don't need anything else.

POS Yamaha combo - 50 watts with a 15 that always farted

Borrowed my brother's Peavy combo - old head with a 4x10

SWR Silverado with the 4x8 - great sound

Added a SWR Triad

Bought an Alembic F1-x and used it with a Carver PM 1.5 to power the Triad

Sold the Silverado and Triad

Bought and Eden 210XLT and a 210T

Sold them, bought an Epifani 2x12

Selling that, buying an Berg NV610

Not too bad in 7 years! Sort-of 5 rigs.

  • Fender 100T
  • Gallien Kruger 800, 1001 and 700RB
  • Markbass something or other...

Cabs:
  • Bergantino 2x12, 2 - 1x12's (two different times) and a 322
