I was after a bit more of a high gain overdrive rather than a distortion or fuzz. I've got a couple of fuzzes already, although I would like to try the TAFM. A Rat Tail or the MXR Bass Distortion is probably next on my list to pick up though but for now it's not what I'm needing.

After those, I'd say some unknown fuzz. I'm trying to find a fuzz that works for me, and I'm dang close. Thinking the Rails will get the fuzz where it needs to be in the mix.

Another fun variation - top 3 "fun" (i.e. not used a whole lot on your board, but nice to mess with) pedals.

3. Joyo Classic Flanger

I'm starting to get my stuff together now, and I think I could get by with these three:
  • Boss CE-2B Bass Chorus. Yes, it's an old pedal and most people sell these off, but it gives me a more subtle and organic sound than the newer ones, IMHO. I can even live with the fact that it requires a 12V supply while all my other pedals can live off a 9V one spot on a daisy chain. The newer choruses are more flexible, but I tend to be conservative when it comes to effects and like the subtlety. I used to require some kind of Phase 90 clone, but after getting this, I think my Phase 90 clone will be limited to the occational Pink Floyd song (see below).
  • Compressor pedal. Today I use a Joyo Dyna Compressor, but the jury is out on this one. I think it muddles the sound very slightly. It is still an important pedal. I may get a Boss LMB-3 to replace it.
  • Overdrive pedal. Another Joyo, the Ultimate Drive does this service today. But I think it is a too hot pedal, and difficult to adjust just right. When adjusted right, it does sound good, though.
Runners up (these are also on my board, but not as important):
  • Phase 90 phaser. I have 3 of these, one DIY and 2 clones. All wil do the job. I tried other phasers, but they don't do it for me. It has got to be a phase 90 or a clone for me. I used to have this on my top 3 list, but after finding the CE-2B, I have found it suits me better most of the time.
  • Mooer Bass Sweeper. This autowah-type pedal has its use on some songs. Usually I find such effects to be over the top, but sometimes this is just what the doctor ordered. Especially with the fuzz engaged, this is a powerful presence.
NB. I am not counting the tuner pedal, since it is true bypassed when I'm actually playing, but I do consider it THE most important pedal as it keeps me in tune and acts as a mute switch.

1. Beiger's Tru Tron X3 - nice dark pre-amp and incredible envelope filter.
2. Buzzard Fuzz (Hudson Electronics) - germanium fuzz. This one is bass-friendly and really out of commonness. Iron Ether Oxide. Love them both!
3. Strymon Timeline. When i have got this delay - i've started to use it almost everywhere. It sounds near perfectly.

Sonic Research Turbo Tuner > MXR Micro Amp > MXR Bass Preamp.

I have a nice collection of pedals of varying usefulness, but I never gig without those three on my board. With the XLR on the MXR Bass Preamp, sometimes my pedalboard is my entire rig - I can show up at a venue with decent house sound and go ampless. I generally only do that with singer/songwriter type gigs, though.
