I think that's similar as comparing a professional engineer or a guitar-maker (selling his products or working for a company) and a DIY freak making pedals/amps/guitars/you name it in his basement. They don't do it for the same reasons but both are perfectly fine. In the first case you rely on the money that you make with the job to pay your bills (hopefully you may also enjoy your job), in the other case, your hobby is probably costing you more than buying the same thing in a shop, but you do it for the enjoyment/experience.
I am earning my money with a regular job (unfortunately no 6 figure salary, but still making more than enough to live) and I am perfectly fine spending this well earned money in whichever hobby I like, in my case music.
Therefore as long as the deal is fair, I would (and almost always did) play for free, or if we are making money, it will pay the gas/drinks and the rent for the rehearsal room or any other band-related expense.
By a "fair deal", I mean that if someone is trying to maximise his own profit by getting us play for free (unless good cause), that's a clear no-go, but apart from that it's all good.
