Nah, I won't do it on principle. It demeans every musician.
My time is worth more to me to sit at home than come play for a bunch of tightwads that want it for free. Fsckem. Go call the local middle school and have their band program come play for experience and exposure. That's appropriate.

I'm doing this for three reasons. One, hanging out with models. Two, we'll get nice pictures of the gig. Three, this sort of falls under exposure, but I want to see how a crowd of basically all total strangers who haven't heard these songs before will react to it. Playing for the singer's friends, they have their definite favorites. I want to see if the reactions of new people will be consistent.
I don't usually correct people who are wrong on the Internet, but in this case I'm a DJ who also plays guitar. Though for this gig the singer wants me to switch to double bass. While still DJing. So, we'll see how that shakes out.Yeah, as noted you're a bass player. Unless you had a Fender Bass VI and kind of looked like you were playing guitar you really were invisible...
Jim Dandy isn't quite as...agile as he was in the 1970s, but then not many of us are. In 2013 they were 4-piece, with Jim, Ricky Lee Reynolds, Johnny Bolin (Tommy's brother) on drums and a bass player whose name I've forgotten. It was a fun evening, the guys were friendly to us and to the fans.
Here they are with our singer (red Tshirt) and some unidentified old guy in the back, and Jim Dandy with our band.
Take your guitar. Wear it, but don't play it. Your chances will soar.

The last time I did a free gig was for a friend's kid's birthday party. We did it for all the food and beer we could intake.

That's the best justification I can think of to play for free...not counting valid charity events.

Played the state prison once. BL offered the band to state institutions for free.
The Pen had 80 inmates show up, 6 armed guards out back. I was so nervous
looking at theses dudes, thought I'd wet myself.
They turned out to be a great audience, singing and dancing along.
Played the state reform school after. Horrible situation. The kids were
nasty, vulgar, screaming.

Made a rule in the band that we would do one free gig per band member per year. After awhile that changed to one free gig a year. The only one I think we have done is a church the bandleader attends. The BL puts up with an awful lot from us and is always awesome about it so I have no qualms about it.
Last time we played a charity event for them and they made sure we were well fed while we were there and when we left there was a case of beer and a bunch of food for me to take home.
I think the "worst" is anything that's for exposure. Every time one of those comes up it's the same old song and dance and is never worth it.
