I tried. I want a "nice" bass. Great tone, feel and looks. Obviously by spending more, I am willing to pay for things that don't necessarily improve tone or playability - like a fancy top for example.

Then my choice would be a used Lakland 44-94.

The majority of high end active basses have passive preamps now anyway. I'd have a harder time telling you the onces that don't with the exception of Spectors.

Based on the basses Steve has gotten his hands on that'd be a pretty big step down. I love Squiers for what they are but for the money he's considering there's much nicer out there.

Actually, Squiers ARE nice basses that sound feel and look great. It makes me wonder WHY you'd pay for things that don't actually make an improvement to the instrument.

I'd probably go with a Sadowsky Metro MV4.

I'd have my eyes open for a Zon Vinny 4 and retrofit it with whatever electronics I wanted. Even new and with options you can get them under $2500.

If it fits the budget - great... If it's a little more, search those sofa cushions... If it's a lot more....

EASY! 2010 Fender American Deluxe Jazz V. Swap the electronics if you want (though they are REALLY good) and use the rest on other gear. Alternatively, you could go custom with Tom Clement, or Brubaker for $2500 or less. And Alleva Coppolo has their new barebones bass set at $2500 I'm sure it sounds awesome like the rest of 'em.

I'm seeing a lot of people suggest Valenti. His basses are AWESOME but the majority of his 5s are 35" scale. I think you might be able to get a custom from him for under $2500 though.
