...what bass do you buy knowing you want a 34" scale 4 string, probably active/passive, versatile enough to do jazz, R&B, worship, rock, etc. Needs to be easy on the back, and easy on the eye.

I'd go for a German Warwick Corvette $$. Versatile in pretty much every way.

Necks are too fat on Warwicks.

I wanted a 34" scale 4 string, active/passive, 21+ frets, rosewood hoard, ash body, not a typical "jazz" bass or variation. I think the Lakland 44-02 fits the bill quite well.

I'd get either a Stambaugh or an FBB. Both are great basses and you get a lot for your money with them.

44-02, Ash, Rosewood board, Bartolini, 22 frets, active/passive. Should be just fine. I'd love a 44-94 of course, but the price was right on the 44-02 and the US basses are just out of reach for me these days.

I've had a 55-02 in the past and liked it a lot - except the 35" scale. I'm gong 4 string these days as I don't need/use the B string so hopefully the 34" neck will hit the spot.
