Zon basses - is everything OK ?

Tone, it had more tone than the others and it was good growly grunt when you spanked it or leaned into it. I play finger style. It was amazingly separated in that the pickups are close together but still have good separate voicing. Joe described how the coils sit further in front and back of a stingray pickup placement. He also said a bubinga top would have worked as well in this since I wasn’t real thrilled with the particular look of the wenge but I chose to keep it how it was because I didn’t want to chance a difference I wasn’t in favor of. I wanted what I heard because it really floored me. He said the Purple Heart was softer than the wenge and it had a rebounding effect off the harder wood top( or something like that) and that the two together are thicker than just a top and ash body.

There is a 519 on sale in Italy right now that have that set up but it's 35inch (and no truss)

I also played a Legacy Special 519 at a shop in few month ago...a bit heavy but sounded wonderful!

A Redwood Burl 519 I owned. Sounded really good especially if you really dug into it with your hand resting on the neck pickup. Seemed to be the key to get a bit of grumble out of it for rock or prog. I couldn’t do the 19 mm spacing. Hated selling it. Sounded so good. When I compared it side by side to my 5-1 the body and neck where bigger on the 519. Redwood is a good tonewood.

My 17 mm spacing 5-1 with Cocobola top ash body. Played this for 10 years. 2013 to 2023. Good times. Loved this machine.

The 19 mm spacing would be a plus for me :)

19 mm spacing on a four string works for me, but not on a five string. I didn’t think the 19 mm spacing was gonna be a big deal but it just didn’t work for me. on another note when I spoke to Joe We discussed the build and I let it be known that I wasn’t real crazy about having to take the neck off to adjust it. I understand why they do that. He said that is all changing, and that moving forward in the near future, you will be able to adjust the rod without taking off the neck. once I got Zon dialed in, I only adjusted it twice a year in June and December. Usually just a quarter turn and it takes a couple days to take affect folly in my experience. I never liked doing that and I don’t think you should have to do that. in fact, I always hated adjusting the neck. not the adjustment itself, but the taking the neck off and putting it back on part. It felt like I was the kings jester, and if I didn’t make him laugh off withmy head, or into the dungeon very uncomfortable for me. Was always wondering if I was tightening the neck bolts too tight and eventually the threads were gonna get loose and stripped out or something and that never happened but I just didn’t like it.

They are cool, but it is a large price jump. Other than the shape, you get a set neck, and I think they automatically come with more boutique woods. But I think you can option a Sonus similarly for less money, so you wind up paying for that shape.

But I might be missing something.

When I had my Zon built it was more affordable to do a set neck Sonus than a Legacy. For whatever reason. Worked for me.
