Zon basses - is everything OK ?

Hope things are getting better with Zon. What with the Chico fires and then COVID (which the world's economy and everything is still recovering from), and whatever else that's been happening... that's a lot.

I have a Zon Mosaic Standard (from their early 2010's made-in-Korea import line) and it's a terrific bass. I toured up and down the East Coast with it during my time in Pool of Thorns. Most comfortable 35" scale 5-string I've played.

some day I'd love to own another fretless sonus, there's nothing else on the planet like it. It just has to be acquired used..... and with a truss rod.....

Quite possibly the best bass I ever owned (which is saying something) was a Sonus 5-string unlined fretless with the first generation Lightwave setup. I bought it new in 2000 and played it for about 10 years (along with a fretted Sonus 5 I got) until I traded it with a friend. At that point the electronics were getting a bit fiddly (I did take it to Lightwave once to have a refurb - they were fairly local to me) and there was a hint of delamination happening but that thing sounded like no other bass I've played before or after. Just this crazy purity of essence going on.

Thanks for sharing! Nice looking axes. Why would I ignore the experimental introductory?
I’ve never played fretless much ever. They do sound really cool. Feel like I’d get lost on one. Would probably need a lined fretboard? Iam lost with frets. I loved the cool grooves and the singers voice was amazing.

Very cool, those older lightwave fretless ones were amazing. I believe originally it was a collaboration with Bona, unless I’m mistaken. There was one at the shop when I was working there that was pretty fantastic.

Thanks, that was a fun band that helped me navigate a divorce. But like many groups, we formed, played some gigs, did an album, then fell apart. The drummer was a 21-year old kid from Japan, guitarist wrote most of the music and had been at Berklee, and the singer Venus was amazing. If you're curious, the album tracks are here. Some interesting time signature shifts and feel changes. And it is all Zon, all the time on them

nothing new. Last time I spoke with Martin a month or two he said he would get back to me about electronics…I’m asking for vbt setup with the Bart 18v buffer…if anything it saves them a cost of a preamp

it’ll happen. I can’t imagine it’ll be more than a couple more months. We shall see. Thankfully the twins and work keep me busier than I can keep up with, so I really don’t even think about it except when I see this thread

Hi everyone,

I am like most people on this thread expecting a bass this year. Curious if you have heard of the gloss finish on Zon basses being prone to cracking? Most images online typically show a well taken care of bass with cosmetic cracks especially the legacy models.

I am wondering if I should switch to the Matt finish.

I had a Sonus 6 fretless bought new in '96 and traded in 2001: no finish cracking just a few superficial fingernail marks around the stacked volume and tone controls.
