Musician's Fiend? :hiding:

You betta watch ya self there....might just end up with "The Perfect Butt-whuppin'"!!! :D

...on topic, I think most here know my opinion of the Zon basses, all fretli are measured against my Sonus Special 5 Fretless, and so far, while some have come close, none have claimed the title of "King of the Hill"...

...however, something is brewing about 30 feet from where I sit right now...

:ninja:

If I ever get a few thousand dollars to spend on a bass, I'd get one of these. I love Manring's fretless tone:

Yeah, I have yet to play one, but I have a Zon gig bag for one of my beaters.......when I showed up to a jam session the drummer there also moonlit as a bassist (we had never met), and he saw the bag, his eyes got wide and he said " BRO? you got a ZON in there?!?!

LOL, all his excitment went away when I pulled out the ibanez....I left there thinking I have to either get a Zon or a new gig bag. I guess its like putting a cover on a '80 Plymoth K car..... :)

I got a fretless custom 4 last week and it's the greatest bass I've ever played. In terms of tone and playability the Zon is untouchable, I can't put the thing down! I haven't had too much experience with fretted Zons but if anyone is looking for a fretless Zon wins hands down.

My new family addition is a Sonus Custom 6 I was treated to on my last birthday.

I have owned a lot of bases and this is one the best (thanks Joe). I was worried that a six string would be a bit much in weight and that durn extra string. Now it's a week or so later and I couldn't be happier with the sound, feel and looks!

Oh and I can see another in my future...

Just to elaborate a little, because I was concise in my first reply:

I had my Zon custom built from the factory. I had talked to Joe and crew over the phone numerous amounts of times and they were always very helpful, friendly and informative.

My Zon (I wish I had pics) is a Sonus 4 string, 24 fret, 34 inch scale fretted. It has a solid ash body and myrtlewood top. The neck pick up is essentially a p-bass pickup with a single coil cover (so it look like a single coil) and the bridge is a linear single coil j-bass style pick up. Volume, tone and stacked low/high eq knobs with a mid frequency control in the cavity. My electronics were taken from (exactly the same as) Bill Gould's of Faith No More.

By far the best bass I have ever had. Well worth the wait and price.

My only things about my experiance that I didn't car for was that Joe had said he'd send me photos of different myrtlewoods so I could pick. Never happned. It wasn't until the basses completion that I found out that they put black hardware on instead of chrome (admittedly it does look better). However, when I asked why I was told at the time they only had black so they went ahead and fitted it and then just went with it. Not to mention they charged me for it too (black is more than chrome). They only charged me 1/4 of the normal price for black, but considering I was unaware of the switch until I got the call that the bass was complete I felt it was a little unfair. Also my bass is fitted with two hipshot d-tuners (E and D strings). Well it should've had four. But again it wasn't until the completion of the bass that I was informed that the bolt on head stocks dont have as much real estate as the set necks, therefore they couldn't do four. This was something I felt I should've been informed about before the bass ever started being built.

All that said, when I got it, I was absolutely blown away by it. The bass (and any other Zon I have ever played for that matter) is just an absolute masterpiece. It plays great, sounds great, keeps tune great, looks great, feels great.... You get where I am going. If you went with a Zon you couldn't make a better choice.

I'd be happy too, wouldn't you?

Anyway, check this out. I just found a Zon at their website that's drop-dead gorgeuss. It has LED lights in the fretboard dots that match the beautiful paint. I'm still trying to figure out what's on the headstock.

it tells you....
"Below: Arion's signature and the likeness of his favorite anime hero come alive on the headstock. "

Yeah Joe can do cool stuff. If you check out this one:

It's a pretty fancy Sonus he did I think just to show off his skill. He takes it to shows. It's got a koa top, purpleheart accent, the body is mango wood, then purple hear again and koa back. You can see the fancy inlays, but thing that surprised me most, and unfortunately you can't see in the picture, the back of the neck has a strip of koa inlaid into it! It was pretty cool lookin.

That is a pic of Todd Johnson's bass - he's a GREAT player and teacher .... and a all-round nice guy (no, he did NOT pay me!). I just got his walking bass DVD and am starting to go through it. Good stuff!
