Zoom B1Xon Settings Thread...... OMG

Just picked up a B1on this afternoon. I dismissed this pedal when it came out because it looked cheap. But I have to say, it's packed with good features and sounds very good. Like all multi effects units, you have to take the time to get to know how to tweak it and edit patches but once you do that, there are a lot of great sounds to be had. Yeah, it's plastic but for $60 Canadian, you can't go wrong. I baby my gear anyway so plastic won't be an issue for me.

My B1XON arrived today and I have to say I'm really impressed with the sounds and I just updated to the latest firmware, so I'm looking forward to messing around with it even more. Whats surprising is that there are zero updates for the MS60B.

I received my B1ON about a week ago and was able to test it out in a live setting last night.

Well, I think I'm hearing potential. At home, many of the patches sound fantastic and very usable. In the field, volume discrepancies proved to be the first area I need to tweek. Not a big surprise there. I ended up using SLAP and FAT MAN for the majority of our sets. I was getting a very high quality tone from these settings and they seemed to sit in the mix fairly well.

I was running my Warwick through the B1ON into my SWR LA12(set flat). Last night was just an jam night type deal with a guitarist I play with often. By the end we had 2 acoustics, 1 mandolin, 1 electric and a harmonica going. Playing mostly classic and folk rock with some easy to follow originals thrown in.

I recently also purchased a Hartke Bass Attack (1.0) and having gotten it dialed in nicely, I was missing aspects of it's tone at times. I had been playing the B1ON alone, but I think I'll be creating some settings to place it in from of the Hartke now. We'll see how it goes. I'll probably look to set up for for stand-alone use while I'm at it.

I just hate tweeking...gotta do it though

Had another gig Friday and ended up just popping the B1ON out of my signal chain. I was using my Traynor tube head and my PH 1x15. After the first song, I didn't feel like cycling through patches in the middle of the gig, so out it went.

Just last night I finally got around to making my own presets. I decided to wipe the NW presets in the C bank. I'm also going without the amp-sims and going straight FX since I'm currently running into a Hartke Bass Attack and into 1 of 3 rigs.

I'll get into the specifics of my settings if they sound good with the full band and/or after I've tweeked them further. I'll leave you with my bank layout for right now though. (also i'm at work and don't remember if this started on C0 or C1...not that it really matters)

C1 Compressor
C2 Overdrive/Comp
C3 Chorus/Reverb/Comp
C4 Compressor
C5 Envelope Filter/Comp
C6 EQ/Comp
C7 Compressor

A solo/boost channel is something I will be adding for sure.

As you can see, I'm trying to set things up so that I can have my clean (with only compression) channel in a position to where I can easily switch from it to a wet channel. I can see myself getting lost depending on which compressor I'm on, but I felt awfully clever when I had this idea, so I'm at least going to try it out!

B3 or G5 form factor with B1on effects would be great, but really I wish they'd just bring out compact units with in, out, MIDI, and a display, no pedals, USB, and sell a variety of controller units. The basic one could just be two pedals - up and down patch, and captive MIDI sockets so you could just slide a 'B2on' onto it, but also cable up MIDI from a Behringer fully featured controller instead.

If all pedals came in a similar format then chaining several together via audio and also if the MIDI out doubled as a through would be possible, as would connection to an audio matrix system for changing order

USB (or maybe bluetooth) could be used to connect via phone or computer or tablet for editing. Even better you could put your tablet on one of the microphone stand tablet holders and be able to tweak your unit without scrabling around on the floor on a darkened stage...

A fully MIDI-cable MS series pedal (not the half-hearted USB implementation of everything but the 100BT) would be incredible.

I decided to wipe the NW presets in the C bank.
Exactly what I did, I'm sure the guy is a bass genius (although I have never heard of him) but his presets did nothing for me so I ditched them and copied in my favourites (after minor editing).

C1 - JB Dis
C2 - PickHeavy
C3 - DUB BASS
C4 - ReggaeBASS
C5 - Big Willie
C6 - Fat Man
C7 - CLEAN SOLO
C8 - A5 Plate

Yesterday we were doing some recording, I played while our guitarist set up the record levels, then I re-tuned and went for the take. Got a few seconds in and he stops me and says "your bass is distorting like crazy, it wasn't like that when I set the levels". Oops, when I came out of the tuner I had selected C1 (JB Dis) instead of C2 (PickHeavy).

I'm officially a Zoom owner as of last night. B1ON to dip my toe into the effects water on the cheap. My plan is to create a patch for each song, named after the song, in our set list. Most will be compression only I expect. So I'm going to need to wipe out a lot of the presets. Does anyone know if there is a downloadable sheet on the DETAILS of each factory patch? It's just a thing with me that I don't want to lose any should I change my mind and I know the B1ON doesn't allow uploading like the B3 does. I've got the Zoom docs that basically just give you an idea of what each patch does. What I'm looking for is what specific effects each patch has AND what each setting IN those patches is set ti.

This is what I'm looking for - but this is for the G1ON, not the B1:
Invalid Link Removed

If it doesn't exist, I'm going to make it for myself anyway - just wondering if I can save some work if it's already out there somewhere. (Though I'd probably use an Excel format as I find they're easier to manipulate than a .doc, .txt or .pdf)

As for the pedal itself, I ran through the presets last night (probably a ritual for new owners I figure). Gonna be fun whacking each patch into shape!

Oh, one more thing. My guitar player for some reason REALLY wants to do Alex Clare's Too Close. Dubstep wobbly synthy bass thing. Any suggestions of a patch for that?

Someone made a pdf of all of the MS-60b presets, but no one here has yet done that for the B1on. Might be cool to have as a community resource. I haven't looked elsewhere on the web.

I find most of the presets to work really well in a live context without much adjustment. One thing to be aware of with these Zooms is that often what sounds like too much or overkill at home actually sits very well in a live mix. I've fussed with patches to get a precise sound at home just to find they didn't work that well live. ("Regular" pedals can be this way, too, I just find it more of a common thing with the Zoom sounds).

I don't have one myself at the moment. I would start with the Z-synth (dialed way back, a little goes a long way) for some of the dirty envelope synth sound, and perhaps the autowah or A filter to bring out more envelope sound. Put a compressor in front to keep the input signal even, and put a tremolo at the end for the wobble.

I brought my B1on to a rehearsal session recently as a preamp/flavor device since I was using a supplied amp (Peavey TNT 130). I set up all the amp models with corresponding cabs, and preamps as basic patches. No extra EQ/compression/effects since I use my LMB-3 and B3K behind it. I set everything on the Zoom weeks ago at home on my little Peavey Microbass, and it all translated well at rehearsal. Only tweak I had to make was dial down the B3K's gain.

Up and running in less than 5 minutes and it sounded killer. I've used various Peavey amps as backline before with no complaints, but I was seriously impressed with the tone. I thought it was on par with my Aguilar rigs (TH500 with either a DB410 or 412), tonally at least.

Thanks jumblemind and seedokebass! I doubt I'll use this for much anyway - mostly compression - except for specific songs that cry out for augmented sounds.

But great suggestions on creating that wobbly bass Bryan. I'll give it a go! And I suspect you're right that the existing patches are ok as-is. But they're all over the place in the banks and I need them rearranged to suit my style (another good reason to document the settings, so I can put them where I want them in the banks)

I'm roughly 1/3 way through documenting them already anyway so I think I'll just bite the bullet and finish it myself. Not sure if I can post the results here as an attachment or not, but I'll try when I'm done. Though I want to start tweaking and re-arranging, I'm not going to do that till I have this "backed up" so to speak.

As a taste, if anyone is interested, here's the file and format I'm working on. I've hidden the details rows in the first bank (like rows 3&4), but left them unhidden in the rest. Those that ARE hidden though have the actual details in them, unlike the unhidden rows. So I've got Bank A done.

Now, to see if this site will let me upload it:

...and no. Doesn't like Excel extensions. Well, I'll just export it to a tab-delimited .txt file. It'll look like crap in Notepad but you can open it in Excel and it will regain it's proper layout (though I can't hide stuff to make it look pretty that way). Maybe when I'm done I'll upload it properly somewhere and link it instead.

UPDATE: Completed the first 1/2 of the presets (which technically is all I'll need to overwrite). I am removing the file I uploaded before since I should be complete and have the whole thing ready to upload in a day or two though. Might as well complete it "for posterity".

YES!!! You've just saved me hours of documenting! Wow, why didn't I think of doing that? Well anyway, thanks a bazillion gfour. Saving that pdf right now. Of course this prevents me from gaining my sainthood status, but I'd rather have the hours back.

Well I spent all last night working (not playing) with this. I created a specific patch for each song in my setlist. The majority are just ZNR > Compression > EQ with various settings. (Love that ZNR noise reduction. Makes it dead silent when I'm not actively playing anything). There are clearly people who just don't like digital effects at all, but I can't see how anyone could argue that these three (ZNR, Compression and EQ) don't work extremely well with this pedal. My attempts to do a Too Close effect were... not good. But besides that I'm 100% convinced this is the best $50 I've ever spent on an effects pedal of any sort. May go for the B3 for it's solidity if experience proves this is too flimsy, but for now I'm extremely happy and only pissed that I have to waste 8hrs/day on my day job before I can get back to it! (Got tons more songs to make patches for!). I'd share them here, but again most are just different variations on ZNR>Comp>EQ.
