Zoom B1Xon Settings Thread...... OMG

Been working on a fun little project lately with my B1on-

22 tones constructed with looping in mind, each based on Tarot cards (specifically the Major Arcana).

They're not yet finished (I'm working on The Hermit now), but I felt like sharing and this seemed like the place.

Basically, I've made them with my looping style in mind- I use an active humbucker bass with pressurewound strings, so there's a lot of melodic and chordal work, and most of my EQing is dialed right into my instrument. Thus, most of these effects are mild but thematic, and the plan is to have them sort of progress in a general order of ascending complexity/situationality.

Here's a quick overview of what I've got so far--

0. The Fool: Beautiful simplicity: this is a clean tone with a very gentle, pleasant reverb for playing unaccompanied.

1. The Magician: The power of action: an understated but meaty overdrive with a bit of reverb, for that little bit of "look at me!" good for lots of situations.

2. The High Priestess: The power of stillness and receptiveness: a very spacious modulated sound for creating ambient soundscapes, made with whole notes, drones and chords in mind.

3. The Empress: Fostering emotional growth: Modulation featuring a flanger for a colorful ambiance

4. The Emperor: Fostering productive growth: Overdrive similar to the Magician but without the reverb, for strong low-end work without mudding up

5. The Hierophant: Tradition and communication: A funky envelope with a vocal cadence

6.The Lovers: Embracing personal truth: A bit of drive and a modest single delay to repeat and emphasize a good lick.

7. The Chariot: A devoted forward charge: A bit of digital-sounding fuzz with a pleasant reverb to slice through a mix with a forceful-sounding solo.

8. Strength: Power through composure and dignity: The Chariot's fuzz sound without the reverb, for present and articulate bass lines

Those nine cover the essential elements of my looping, while further entries will be more distinct and situational- for example, I think I'd like the Hanged Man to employ the reverse delay. I'd also like to keep thematic parallels between as many cards as possible- Like, I'm pretty sure the Devil will be more fuzzy and distorted version of the Lovers.

I've also taken a stab at modifying my B1on to extend the Looper and Home buttons, to make switching between the patches easier while looping with just the one unit.

It's a fun little project, more for self-entertainment than anything else, but I'm quite happy with how it's going so far.

Very nice, and an interesting outside the box approach as well. I saw something about extending those two buttons a while ago, was that you? Anyway, if you have time, a vid of how that works/is put together, or maybe just a rundown here. Those are 2 mods I could really use as well. Apart from no usb librarian (though someone was working on a hack for that a while back..we know it can be done) I find these pedals pretty useful. I have been running the G and the B in parallel in stereo.

one thing I have been digging into lately is using the particle reverb for a quick hit, having it swell, then cutting it off with the pedal..all sorts of fun things from that..also using the reverse delay before and/or after it, with the FB on the treadle.

That was me- I was looking for a faster way to cycle through my deck of cards (so to speak) while playing outside, since hooking up to one of my many other loopers robs me of headphone output and increases battery consumption significantly.

What I settled on as a mod was extremely primitive- I just used a moldable adhesive called sugru and stuck a little lump of it on the buttons I wanted to raise. You can get it at Walmart, Target, etc. The stuff cures into a reasonably durable rubber, and while I've yet to see how it holds up to regular use, for now it at least lets me hit the buttons with my feetsies.

If it should happen to fall off on me, I think I'll keep using the sugru buttons, but just anchor them on with a stronger glue.

Newbie necro-bump - but it's better than a creating a repeat new topic hey...?

New to bass (<6mths) and new to (more-so chaining) pedals/multi-effects. Was previously running the bass through a Line6 Pocket Pod I had for an old guitar. The Line6 PP was a lot easier to customize with it's PC software - but mostly due in part that the scope of customization was limited essentially to a Head/Amp/Single Effect.

After the limitations of the PP hit it's expiry date - onto the internet and a lot of reading over this forum to decide on getting the B1Xon as a 'proper' bass pedal with the hope of being able to better replicate tones than what i was doing on the PP.

After a fair bit of fiddling and playing around - frustratingly do not feel anywhere close to obtaining/replicating a tone(s) I thought I would be able to chain up relatively easily....so hoping that someone with a lot more experience in chaining effects with the B1Xon (+ a genuinely good bloke/girl) could give me some advice or a jump start by knocking together a tone for me?

For reference:

1.45 - 1.56 is just the bass and drums for best tone reference.

F|----------------------------------------------------------|
C|----------------------------------------------------------| x4
G|---------------------------------------------------------|
A|-9--7--0--6--3--0--9--7--0--6--3--0--9-7-0--6-3-0-|
For the line being played

I've genuinely failed trying to build from scratch. And the closest I have gotten is playing with some of the existing tones and putting an OD or Muff/Fuzz somewhere in the patches chain - but still doesn't sound close enough.

Any help greatly appreciated to get started!

Cheers - Chris

Chris, are you going straight into a DAW? Have you been to the page in the B where it lets you choose the output for cab/line out etc? One thing I know is that a sound like this is made with a blend of clean and distorted signals, and that sound can be really different depending on what you are monitoring through. Also, a combination of od and fuzz..stacking the efx...can help quite a bit.

This gets us into some pretty basic stuff, but I hope it helps in the way you approach making a patch.

MASTODON?

What I'm hearing is a lot of compression, a lot of fuzz, without as much high end as one tends to hear in bass lines. I don't actually like it much because I can't really hear his notes as clearly as I would like. How about a compressor at the front of the chain, a strong fuzz that maintains bass without injecting too much high frequency stuff, maybe a *light* chorus, a GEQ to manage treble (or possibly an amp model can add color while doing the same thing), and another compressor at the end?

Hi Johnp - thanks for your input, apologies for the slow response - but been difficult to get time at a keyboard since posting.

Right now I am just playing out of the headphone jack directly into headphones. As far as a recording set-up I do have, it's pretty basic - but when messing around with recording in the past, i have noticed the difference from headphones to the DAW. Current set up is a Roland UA-1G interface via Audacity. Future state, i'd at least like to upgrade the interface - but putting priority on focusing on the playing right now.

OD and Fuzz was what my thoughts were initially prior to getting the unit. Ideally wanting to get a tone that has some immediate color/warmth that underlies and supports the wave of OD/Fuzz that tails after the initial hit. First attempts working from scratch I've struggled adding that color/warmth element - but secondary attempts adding OD/Fuzz to established pedals (eg: J3 - remote) has gotten me a bit closer to that balance.

Hey Spblat - ditto from my above response regarding thanks for your time and apologies on delayed reply.

Can appreciate the tone isn't to everyone's tastes - so i won't mention any other bands I love that take this type of tone to the next level haha.

Some of the existing patches I have modified contain similar chain structure to what you have suggested, minus the fuzz - and they have great colour and rich deepness to the sound - definitely what I want to build off. I've found the fuzz pedals on the B1Xon to be quite dominant in removing the colour from the of the base of the tone - wanting to keep some initial colour I'm keeping the fuzz balance pretty low to try and counter this (and keep some fuzz in after the hit of the string) - not sure if this is the best way to approach this....? I'll keep playing around this week when I find time.

Cheers, chris

Groups like Mastodon have a lot of time/gear etc to get things done. And that's before you consider where it was done. I like it when I can hear a bit of the room, and the untreated bass too, though a lot of my favs recently won't necessarily do either. Then there's the mix effect, what sounds cool solo is not often what stands in a mix, a big discussion here at TB. So we are going to try to get you closer, but be aware that it's often really frustrating to go after something when you don't have the resources. Having said that, I think the thing is to come up with something YOU really like as a bassist, something that allows you to express yourself, and play nice with the musicians you like to play with. It's amazing what happens when you begin to do this.

So I got one of these a while back, but only have I recently begun digging into all of its features and try to design my own effects. With the number of options this thing has though, it's quite daunting. Any recommendations/resources for getting started?

Look in those manuals. They describe all stuff and how it works

@davemayhem333 the sound you singled out (1:46) in the mastadon song is super saturated and compressed. I would try chaining an od and a few fuzz pedals together, and mess around with the gain structures of the individual pedals...everything on full blast is going to be mushy and add a lot of noise. Start low and slowly work your way up. And maybe throw a comp/limiter at the end to reign everything in that tone sounds very "expensive" to me lol
