Double Bass Zyex medium vs. light

Friend convinced me to give the zyex a go on my juzek so I ordered a medium set during a sale... reading this thread makes me want to return them. Not workable under the bow and a crappy E string? hmmmm

Well, the whole bowing part may depend on your skill level. I have heard some folks bow them to satisfaction. But i do stand by the weak E comment. Daddario just still seems to be trying to figure out the whole E string thing. My Helicore E wasn't much better.

I will say that the Zyex has a pretty incredible G string. It's physically fat and sounds substantial. My favorite string of the set.

I just switched from mediums to lights. I am terrible with a bow and yet the zyeks were a lot easier than the spiro mittles or weichs. I would never have described the e string as weak either. The biggest problem that I had with the mediums was the fact that they made my bass sound like a tin can for almost three week, the next three years though, they sounded excellent; much better than the spiro mittels. I’ll let you know about the lights when they settle in. Right now, they sound awful! They feel nice and I have high hopes for them.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks and the Zyex lights are settling in nicely. The open A string is still a little twangy, but not bad. These are definitely the strings for my c1930 German carved bass. They are very comfortable to play and easy to bow. They feel and sound even across and up-and-down the bass. None of the strings are in any way "weak" on this bass. My instrument is louder than it has ever been and the top and back vibrate noticeably more than they ever have. When I bought this bass it had ancient Spiro mittels on it and sounded great. These eventually started to sound dull to me and I switched to weichs, which sounded absolutely awful for more than a year. As I said earlier, I then switched to Zyex mediums that sounded great for the last 3 years but it seemed to be harder to get the sound I wanted so I changed to the lights and am happy that I did. One caveat, I also had my bridge and sound post moved away from the neck a little and the extra 1/4" or so of string length may have helped (the bridge was above the grooves in the F-holes so I had it moved back to where it supposedly should be).

Zyex mediums were put on my juzek last night. I have a good week to play them in before I need to use the juzek again. They are bright but under the bow they sound fine. The A string doesn't annoy me any more than the other strings so hopefully they die together. I'll stick with them for a bit and see how I feel in a month. The pizz sound is very nice though.

The only string I like on the Zyex was the G string specially medium. But you can work with them. Yes they are easy to bow. When they get older and they get old fast the nuance is less than a Spirocore when bowed.

I do not like them on my dark sounding bass and they got worse with age to my ears.

After using Obligatos for years, I decided to try the Zyex. I liked the idea of the lights, but a .101 E sounded a bit wimpy. So, working with Mark Gollihur, I put together a set of light G-D-A plus a medium E-string (I think it's .104). The set did sound balanced and the heavier gauge E was more to my liking ...not enough though. They have a great sound - much more "present" than the Obs, but I couldn't get used to the feel. I only played them a few times, maybe an hour at most, pizz only.

The whole Zyex set is up for sale - $80 shipped CONUS - I have no original packaging, but I have my invoice from the purchase at hand. I'll post a classified ad later.

No, long gone, sorry! I've gone all the way back to Corellis. They're a versatile and easy-fingering steel string. Not much love here on TB, but plenty here at home :).

Corelli's had their era here. Some years back, a lot of people were into them. Maybe they still are, but just don't post about it.

I know that Lynn Seaton is or was a Corelli user.

I currently have Corelli 370Ms on both of my basses. One set is ~15 years old and played over 200 gigs minimum! I used to kind of stick my nose up to those skinny strings, but I've totally reconsidered them for a number of reasons.

I just had Joey Naeger drop on a set of Zyex lights this morning on my flatback. My bass is already happier...less tension on the top than the 3885s that were on there. They are going to take a few weeks to play in, but I just had carpal tunnel and ulnar nerve surgery a week ago, so they are going to have to sit another 2 weeks before I can really play. However, in the few notes I could get out before I had to stop, my bass sounds more "open". The top seems to be moving freer and it appears to be letting the bass speak easier. I'll report back once the "zing has zagged"!
