ZZTop "playing" live to bass tracks !?!

Sounds and looks to me like he's just holding whatever note that is... didn't strike me as syncing.
I've seen ZZ Top numerous times over the past 20+ years ... there are nights where Dusty plays great, others where he has some issues. But then, haven't we all had a tough night at times?
Particularly on the Eliminator tour, there were a lot of shenanigans going on with the tracks, but they were also the most "physical" (relative to their usual stage presence, of course
) they ever were with all sorts of footwork and trickery taking place. Extremely entertaining, though 
Dusty isn't Nathan East or Will Lee or Pino, let's face it. But he is a solid pocket guy that clearly knows his style of stuff inside & out. In an age where Auto-Tune is everybody's best friend, I'll forgive a backing track "upgrade" every once in a while ...

I don't hear any triplet run at 1:36. He's just holding a note, and his left hand doesn't move until he starts playing again with the right hand.
I listened again this morning and thought the same thing. It's still a tough one - I hear that 'triplet' motion too.
If the drums are surely live, then they'd have to perfectly sync the bass, and play the drums to match a bass track- not likely. I'm thinking live drums = live bass. Can anyone decisively say the drums are live? I can't watch again at work.
That was another thing I noticed and forgot to mention.
If you were going to do a backing bass track, you certainly wouldn't put that little hiccup in there.
Another thing (although I don't believe it's the case here), they often in post editing do not match up exact video with audio on certain camera shots. Whether out of time or a shot from a different part of the song, a different song or a different show entirely. They can manipulate it in post production anyway they want.
I have a live Audioslave DVD where the audio is about 1/4 of a second off from the video the whole DVD. Irritating, but makes the performance look lip sinced, even though it isn't.
I don't what anybody else is listening to. I checked this like 20 times through the good headphones, and it's just him letting the note ring for a few seconds while he does...nothing. You can hear the punch and volume as soon as he starts playing again. It's not that complicated people.

Not only that, anyone with experience playing in front of a crowd knows exactly how to keep a bassline going by tapping with the fretting hand while grabbing a drink, waitress or even a beard with the plucking hand...which is obviously what is being done.

Exactly.Not challenging, just curious--what links or products are you looking at? Because there is a difference, for example, between the commercial release date of a product in a guitar store, and the availability of the technology among product developers and wealthy musicians.
I know Led Zeppelin had a digital delay pretty early on; I'm thinking 1976 tour....
It's that $150 instrument cable he's using. I swear those things are great. Not only do they add tone and volume, they'll carry the bassline for a few bars whilst you wipe snot off your beard.

Match it with one of those $800 power cables and you don't even have to show up.It's that $150 instrument cable he's using. I swear those things are great.
1. The video is not in sync with the audio.
2. 100% Dusty playing.

Otherwise the bass line magically continues at the 1:37 mark despite a quick beard touch up (and the left hand isn't keeping it going folks). Eh whatever, who cares.

i think that used to be the case, and maybe still is for official band releases, but on compilations and stuff lifted from webcasts, it's extremely rare.
