Double Bass Talkbass: East meets West!

Hey guys,
thanks to Talkbass, a cool "East meets West" hang has happened! I traveled from New York to Los Angeles to play at Catalina's with Eldar, and local TBer Andy Allen came to check out two sets, and helped me break the junk-food-as-only-available-option by taking me to a great Italian restaurant. And he's now the new owner of the Juzek I'd put for sale here... miss it already, but I am happy it found a great new home (see attached pic).

I am playing in Seattle, Monterey, Oakland and Orange County this month. If any TBers wanna hang (yo, Troy and Damon!), give me a shout!

I had a great time hanging with Marco while he was here in L.A. I got to see him at Catalina's Jazz Club, where he was busy making blisters in a steaming-hot set with Eldar. :)

And when Marco told me that if I bought his bass I'd instantly be able to play all that clever stuff he plays, I just had to have it :D :D

The annoying thing was that the day I picked it up I had to go on vacation with the family, so I was jonesing all week to get back and play the Juzek. :( (I did take my EUB, so at least my callouses didn't disappear).

I'm going to go back to playing it now :hyper:

I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but should be back in time for the Sunday show. I'll try to make it and say "hi" if I do. Would love to meet you and see you play.

The mainstage at the triple door is a nice venue. A bit pricey, but a really nice theatre.

Hey Troy,
I hope see you Sunday then. It's my first time at the Triple Door. I sure enjoyed our week at the Jazz Alley last December. Great audience and vibe, and the best food I've ever had at a jazz club here in the US. A good meal prior to a show will always make you play better. Well, most of the time, that is.

Marco

You may actually like the food at the Triple Door a little better. It's a really nice place. Great theatre and stage.

If we're not dead from our weekend away, I'll come down and see you. If I don't make it, have a great show and let us know what you thought.

Troy

Actually, I just made that up... I'd never mix cheese and walleye, as both are sacred foods, and perfect unto themselves.

Marco.... you probably know that Eldar has been out here to Maui several times. Maybe you can make it out here sometime! You can borrow my bass if I'm not using it.

Hey Marcus,
Eldar's visits must have happened before I got the gig with him in 2005. Hawaii is one of my top dream destinations, so if we get a gig there in the future, I couldn't be happier.

It's very nice of you to offer your bass... however, considering the brisk tempos that Eldar wants most of his stuff played at, I would have a *really* hard time if you still had Animas on your bass. Soloing in thumb position at 350 metronome has proven doable only with Weichs so far, LOL.

-Marco

Yeah, I hear ya... I've gotten used to it after playing them for awhile on the Hot Club stuff, but they still bite back sometimes on the uptempo soloing. I had Weichs on for awhile last year, and I was racing around like a scared cockroach. I actually found my chops for awhile there!

You big left coast metrosexual, you. * :)

Well, that's a new one. Hippie and Metrosexual are fairly opposite ends of the spectrum. Which hole do you want to pigeon me into, Chris!? ;^ )

Marco, sorry I didn't make it out last night. I was down in California since last Thursday. Got back later than expeced last night and was dragging a fairly large helping of ass. Just couldn't make the turn and go back out. I hope you had a good show and a good meal. I'll catch you next time through or sometime when I'm back east.
