Took the words outta my mouth. It's not the crowds that get to me first during gift-getting season, it's the music. How many times do these songs hafta be recorded. Oh, the last three hundred thousand sounded slightly the same? Lets play them in a different style! With this years flavorite singer/rapper/DJ/death-metal-country-funk-polka band.

Most covers suck because they have no personality of there own. It's like the band is putting on a mask and trying to be like the original, or make it so different that you want to forget it.

Ok I'm a sucker for a good xmas song. I will admit, and I'm not ashamed. Tony Bennett doing My Favorite Things? Yes please! And Reverend Horton Heat doing Run Rudolph Run? I don't even care if it's straight 4/4

I guess I should have said 'they'. I heard them interviewed back when their popularity rose from the song and not one mention of the original. I liked the album 311 but now I just peg them as a cover band.

It was slow. I expected that. Sometimes slow covers of normally fast songs can be fine. She had a weird echo type effect on her electric going on. That was weird.
But this version had no energy. There was no grit, no anger, and NO EMOTION AT ALL in her vox or guitar playing.
IT IS STRAIGHT UP WRONG TO COVER A SONG LIKE SAILIN ON WITH NO ENERGY. :banghead:

I know someone will ask but I'm not going to post a link because it's just that embarrassing and I don;t think it deserves any more plays.

As much as I dislike negativity, especially towards other musicians... Feel free to post some covers that make you angry in le comments below (preferably of good songs made worse).

My feelings on Christmas music are from working too many seasons in retail hell. If there is a hell, then the devil looks like Geoffrey the giraffe.

I forgot to add this one. Saw it the other day and was slightly impressed:

"Talking Loud and Saying Nothing" by Living Colour.

It's not that it's bad, and I like Living Colour, but compared to James Brown's groove, it's inexcusably disappointing. It also illustrates just how important James Brown's vocals and phrasing are to the groove.

Hey bro, I'm right there with you. FFDP is just a modern generic nu metal band, with extreme emphasis on generic.

And maybe its just me, but that whole video just seemed really disingenuous. Maybe it was the eagle at the end, maybe something else, but it just gave me a vibe. Not unlike the exploitative country singers who swoop in to make a profit off national tragedies like 9/11 and such. Really scummy stuff, but just my feelings on the matter.

No joke, the live version off of "Unleashed in the East" (which is 10x better than the studio version) is easily one of my top 10, or maybe even top 5 favorite Judas Priest songs.

A few random thoughts on the matter...

1. Cover bands are in a different league. I think it's better for a cover band to stay true to the original most of the time, but once in a while, I like to hear some altered versions so I get to hear the style of the band. But I hate bands that record covers almost not for note, or covers that are inferior to the original. If you really want to record a cover, at least have the balls to turn it upside down, or at least choose an obscure tune.

2. I love Judas Priest, but their version of Johnny B. Goode is... :meh:

3. I love Vanilla Fudge's version of "Keep Me Hanging On". To me, that's the essence of recording a cover: You take a song that's "meh" and turn into "wow!".
