I think the Cort A5 SCMS (single cut, multi scale) bass is 16mm at the bridge. The one I played a few weeks ago felt really tight, even more so than an Ibanez SR 5er.

I don't know if they still are since I've moved on to different strings, but several years ago the GC near me was selling 5-string sets of Dunlop SBNs for about $7 a pack.

As others have mentioned, I usually insert a flat-head screwdriver into the open side of the retainer clip and give it about a 1/4 to a 1/2 turn and it opens the clip enough to where it pops off. Or, you could use the method shown in this video below by using needle-nose pliers:
