Thank you for clearing this up for me - has been annoying me for ages! Seems so much to learn - and - there I thought I could just pick up a bass guitar coz it was lighter and smaller. As for the side spots, I kinda find them a bit weird, and try and ignore their existance. It's really weird...

I've got a washburn xb120 fretless, which I got to save having to lug the double bass around everywhere with me - but, have now quite taken to the guitar as well, and have two basses!!!! The question I have been dying to ask people is - why do some fretless basses look like they've got frets...

I've got a Washburn XB125 - fretless! It was my first bass, coz I came from double bass and thought fretless would be easier - which, it is kinda - but I now have a fretted bass too!!! It has a lovely sound, and everyone who has heard it have been blown out of the water - even at the recording...

If you've got time - try out lessons and lots of different style basses in the meantime - then you can pounce and grab what you want when it comes up ...

Have you got any experienced bassists around you? It would be worth trying to get someone else play it for you so you can see what's going on from a bit of a distance - plus, they will give you an idea of what they feel may be wrong with it - before taking it to someone who will charge you...

I wouldn't touch an electric double bass, but, that's purely personal opinion. It's pretty easy to mic them up, or get a pick up for them when you need to. If you are getting a double bass - why would you need an accoustic bass guitar? I'm a little confused, if you're going to music college...
