Ok, not the word "sucks." You said they had "junk electronics." Take it to a professional repair shop. I will bet a good tech could find the issue in under 10 minutes.

B+ (power), ground, and signal are the same, so I don't see how it could hurt, but check first since it's easy.

Use a continuity meter and find the one that is connected to the same points as the original. Also possible is that they are identical. Even if you guess incorrectly, I would guess that it wouldn't harm anything if you tried both. Use the meter if you want to be sure, however.

IMO, if you intend to stay with the band, you should talk to him. Consider discussing it in private at first; embarrassing him in front of the other mates won't go well. Be positive and kind. It may go south, or it may go well. Be ready to gracefully accept some feedback from him about your playing.

I have Amazon 9V rechargeables in everything: basses, pedals, smoke detectors, alarms, etc. They last a long time, take charges great, and I've never had a problem with them. With my SR1600, voltage (in circuit) is good for a couple of months. I understand some don't recommend rechargeables, but...

The point of soloing each pickup is to see if the problem is one of them. Just pan from one to the other. And a bad solder joint can most certainly kill tone. Just a suggestion.

Assuming you've checked pickup height and that the strings aren't dead, solo each pickup and see if either is not at expected volume and/or tone. If both seem low perhaps you have an active eq problem or an internal solder issue.
