I really like the sound of new strings, but it wears off quite quickly. Does anyone know of any strings that have a really long lasting "new" sound? Also, what sort of strings would be best for getting an Alex Wester-type tone? I know his sound has more to do with electronics and amps etc...

This has probably been asked a billion times before but string size is a mystery to me. They guages just seem to be a set of random numbers...Any help? What would be the best guages to play downtuned in? (say, D Standard and C Standard ) Thanks in advance
