The switch is an active/passive so you have both. It also has a tone knob to make it more authentic in passive mode. Think of the active option as a plus and useful if you get stuck with a crap bass amp.

God I hope they make a 5 string version.

I had one of these and absolutely loved it. Sold for some unremembered financial crap. I remember it having the sound of a Jazz and Rickenbacker mixed. One of my favorite sounds, the other being Gibson G3 with the three single coil pickups.

Switch it to passive and use the top stacked knob which is top volume and bottom tone. The beauty of the Sire basses is that it actually has a tone knob. And if you ever get stuck with a crappy amp you have the option to use the great pre-amp that is installed in Sires.

DAMNIT !!! I just purchased a 5 V7 and though I love it I would love this a hell of allot more.
