I'd recommend looking at offerings from smaller indi builders such as Master Electronics or Sushi Box.Some very cool bass preamps and I own a couple by each that I'm very satisfied with.

For the price it's especially good.I have one, but having too much time on my hands I couldn't resist putting a Lace Bassbucker in the bridge position along with a Tone Monster preamp.Some may find this blasphemous but it's a cool little demon now.

Aside from those details they're just like the real thing! LOL!

I have taught myself to bar two frets with the pads of any one finger.As you gather more experience you should be able to also.For now do which ever finger works for you.

I'm a bit of a preamp freak and own more than I care to admit.The Bass Butler is one of them and I can surely recommend it.It does the faux biamp thing well,the distortion sounds good as does the clean settings.If you need one preamp for all your needs you could do a lot worse.
