    Why not inverted P?

the two-bright-and-clanky D and G strings on a Precision are the main reason I like a Jazz with pickups in series (standard is in parallel) which makes them act like a big humbucker with a more consistent string to string response. The mod doesn't make it a P but it definitely moves it in that...

    Spectracomp or SD Studio

Haven't tried the SpectraComp but I really dig my SD Studio Bass comp. Takes up a little more space on the 'board but offers lots of control once one figures out the knobs. It allows a wet/dry mix which I like -- I'm sure the TC one can do that too, though I prefer analog. good luck!

    Can't Decide on a Preamp/DI Pedal

Lots of good stuff out there -- I played the new Tech 21 Bass Flyrig at the NAMM show last week and and dug it a lot. It would put my pedalboard out of work! good luck!

    New rig ideas

Consider an "anti-rig"!! A good preamp with a DI (SansAmp, VT Bass DI, Tone Hammer, MXR M81, Darkglass b7k) into a good powered PA monitor speaker (QSC K12, for example) can yield great results and get inside with one trip from the car. Not as sexy as that Ampeg 8x10 setup but once you learn...

When you go see local bands,do you study their gear

I always check out the hardware on stage. My favorite thing in the world is to see is a band with boutique equipment get blown off the stage by some starving 22 year olds with yard sale gear.

Married men, thoughts on wedding bands (rings and tattoos)

Find the ring you like and then wear it on your plucking/picking hand. When I got married I wore the ring on my left hand from my wedding day until the next band practice -- the ring and treble side of the neck were chewing each other up so I moved the ring and it's stayed there since. Wife...

Wireless system for bass guitar - what's being used?

Shure GLX system. It's digital, the receiver can run on DC and live on my pedalboard where it's also the tuner, transmitter uses a rechargeable cell phone type battery. They put all the good stuff in one place, I reckon. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Do you care more or less about your tone than you used to?

I seem to care less about tone these days, since: -what I hear on stage and what the audience hears have little to do with each other. -how a bass sounds by itself and how it sounds sitting between drums and a guitar can be quite different. Really, as long as the gear is decent I can can make...

Who's using slides in his / her music?

Check out Mark Sandman (RIP) with Morphine and his two string slide bass....

Myth of the single trip load in

I get it! Went to a "one trip from the car" rig a few years back and it's been great. Sound engineers like it too, cuz I'm not competing with their PA systems. Bass => (tuner and a couple of effects) => pedal preamp/DI (various over the years) => XLR output to house and 1/4" output to a QSC...

    Anchored vs Floating right hand

I'm most comfortable anchoring my thumb on the pickup while playing on the E and A strings, then moving 'two strings away' on the upper strings - thumb on E when playing on the D string and thumb on A when playing on the G string. Having my thumb on the pickup was too far of a stretch to be...

Who's playing bass while Verdine White is fixing his hair? (Live in Japan)

I think the obvious question is: maybe he just dubbed the part in later? It wouldn't be the first time a live performance had been "sweetened" while editing, and there's plenty that a good engineer can do these days. Verdine may have played the part again and had it 'punched in' or, if it...

I need to substantially retune my MIA JAZZ bass after every song. What's most likely wrong with it?

+1 for Rockin Mike's ideas Check also that the strings are not binding on the nut or string tree. Lubricant or sometimes raising the string tree can help. good luck!

Carvin bass, tung oil or poly?

I'm a fan of a good oil finish. Reminds you that your instrument is really made of wood when you can feel it properly. good luck!

    Alternating index and middle fingers

I usually lead with my middle but "in the moment" it can't matter - gotta play the song with the finger yer on! If you play the downbeats with your middle finger and upbeats with your index, it makes it easier to use that longer middle finger to jump to another string for the downbeat there...
