New rig ideas

I happen to like the Markbass Jeff Berlin combo. Don't get the cheaper Player School one, it doesn't really cut it. I think some people don't like the fact (beside the orange color) that it is a pretty flat sounding amp which I like because I can choose to color it the way I want instead of starting with an SWR, Ampeg or whatever sounding amp and having to work around it too much to make it sound different.

Consider an "anti-rig"!!

A good preamp with a DI (SansAmp, VT Bass DI, Tone Hammer, MXR M81, Darkglass b7k) into a good powered PA monitor speaker (QSC K12, for example) can yield great results and get inside with one trip from the car. Not as sexy as that Ampeg 8x10 setup but once you learn how to drive with the DI/preamp and get the tone there, it works fine.

I would look into getting a fEARless cab or two built by an [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] with your desired options (my favourites include all the weight saving ones!) and your favourite head. I am looking into building my own pair [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] 12/6/1's so I can use one or both with my micro class D head. The neo magnets and flawless design of all those cabs (for both sound and weight) is breathtaking...

GK MB212II. Light and loud. Sounds great & it's one package. This is coming from an ole SWR fan. You can also get one brand new for half of your budget. Or find one here in the classifieds for around $400.

You can not go wrong with this amp. The other suggestions about heads and fearful cabs and the folks that never use combos, toss those replies in the trash can.

FWIW I love my swr gear. i went and tried some mark bass stuff (not the jeff berlin) out and hated it.

look for a workingmans ext cab or a second matching combo (less rare)

alt the SWR SOB cabs aren't stupid heavy (easy two person awkward single person) to carry, go cheap used and have a sweet looking chrome grill. I have 3

Fearful/Fearless if you want a single speaker cab solution. Lots of the big guys are making 212s that sound GREAT and arent outrageously heavy.

Im an Ampeg guy, but also a tube nut, and a whole new rig in that route might be tough in the used department. Youll want to stick with Class D. Definitely check out and try anything you can, id lean towards Aguilar if i had to try it all over again. I like their customer service a lot!!

Nothing, IMHO, beats the fearfuls for single cabs but they need serious power...

I have an Aguilar GS112 which we put up against a 12/6 and it almost went toe-for-toe. I do, however, have to couple it with another 8 ohm cab to cut through louder drums/guitars.

I'm a big Carvin fan but the new Peavey amps are stupidly awesome at a great price.

Someone in Baltimore/DC is also selling a 15/6/1 SHIPPED CONUS for $700 in the classifieds.

Cheapest loudest solution might be:

15/6 - 700

Rack poweramp of choice- 300

Preamp pedal - 150

Like I say, I like the sound of my rig, and have used it for a while. I was looking a bit at the mark bass Jeff Berlin combo....thoughts on that or some other ideas?

If you like the Jeff Berlin, also consider the Markbass 1x12 combo plus an extra cab. More versatile. You can get by with one on gigs that are small and on those where your amp is just a stage monitor and it's a LOT smaller than the JB. For bigger gigs the 2x12 combo will move more air than the JB and is still easier to carry since its modular.

Agreed. The GK MB combos sound great, are very light and plenty loud. I have the first version MB210 and it will cover a lot of ground on it's own. If I need more volume I add an extension cabinet. Someone on my local CL was recently selling a MB210II for $275, which is IMO a great deal! If I would have had any use for it I would have grabbed it.
As for the head/fearful idea, that is fine if you want to spend that much money but there is really no need to.
