New rig ideas

I am looking for some ideas on a new rig.

I play a MIM Jazz V (love it) through an SWR Workingman's 12 and a Working Pro 10. I like the sound a lot, and volume wise it is adequate. I am playing jazz standards, reggae, and rock (think country rock) in small places.

I am trying to up my image a bit ....silk purse and a sow's ear and all that. The combo and cab are a mismatch. What I am looking for is a rig with a similar sound, maybe a bit more volume, and reasonably portable for a late 50's guy.

Like I say, I like the sound of my rig, and have used it for a while. I was looking a bit at the mark bass Jeff Berlin combo....thoughts on that or some other ideas?

Thanks

Well, how important is the aesthetics factor?

If you're going to carry it around a lot, I'd get a MarkBass head with a TC Electronic cab
For your playing, I'd go with a 300-500W transistor head and a 2x12" cab. That way, in small venues where the PA is crap and the cab isn't miced out, it can still produce enough volume to be heard. And 2x12" are best to be carried by 2 people, but are not awkward or heavy when carried so

Then again, it might not be the aesthetic you're going for :P

So, you like what you have but want something that "looks nicer" but sounds like that?

I don't know. The WM12 combo is one of SWR's gems. Maybe look for a WM12 cab to stack it with.

Might just come down to stripping your current stuff of its ratfur and metal grill and giving it some nice covering and grillcloth or something.

Oh, and the answer to the "why not markbass" question is "yellow". :)

There is that

I used to have a 4x10 cab, which wasn't too much of a chore to schlep around when I was closer to those younger "warrior years". But eventually I got a tiny car, so I had to switch into a pair of 2x10 cabs - easier to carry even though loading in/out now requires an extra trip or two. Can't say I've missed the bigger cab at all since my switch.

I went from a Workingman's 4x10 into a pair of Wkmn's 2x10's and while these aren't anything boutique-ish, they've never let me down. I've driven them either with a head or a preamp/power amp setup, so none of these things on their own are serious back-breakers. Bonus points for being able to use either a smaller rig (one cab) or a larger rig (both cabs).

If I went looking for an expandable combo, I might check out a G-K 2x10 combo with maybe the 400rb or 700rb head included, but I'm assuming that those things are still available. If so, it would be easy to expand with a second 2x10 as an extension cab. I also recently saw some interesting rigs at Carvin. Depending on the sound they give you, they seem to deliver plenty of bang for the buck.
