do what's ever comfortable for you, i'll alternate if i'm paddling or doing a gallop, sometimes using three fingers, other times when i'm doing a punch/mute thing in 8th notes i'll use just one finger, i have more control for some reason that way. i basically just do whatever feels naturally...

i hear ya, i'm somewhat in the same boat, only difference is my band is still in the putting the show together stage, where we practice week after week, and no gig or even a hint of a gig in site. i posted a thread about this as well, after reading all the reply's it was very clear to me...
