Single coil pickups hum when on their own. On a regular Jazz Bass, the pickups are wired in parallel and cancel hum when they're both the same volume. On the Precision Bass, the two coils are wired in series, also achieving a hum-cancelling effect. Since there's only one single-coil J pickup...

The new MIM stock pickups' pole pieces are staggered like that, so they might be stock. I'm wondering more about the bridge saddles in the 'After' photos... :confused:

I'd love a two-pickup Stingray or Sterling, but I wouldn't buy a single pickup version.

Fretted is generally the preferred tone for metal. Fretless' may find application in metal (more or less depending on genre), but I'd want frets most of the time.

Black pickguard Series/parallel Hipshot D-tuner Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups, though there are many other good sets. I would probably do at least the first three plus a pro setup. Anything else may be nice, but not necessary. Hell, even the D-tuner is a luxury.

Actually, the Prestige may well have been the superior instrument. Your judgments seem to be based on the bass' setup in the store. If you run into another poorly setup bass at a shop, just ask if they can tweak it so you can get a good idea of what it's really like. It won't cost you anything.

honeyboy, I've seen that before, too. Assuming the repair is less than $200, though, it's probably a fine deal as long as everything else is good.

The standards cost about $1000 for a P and a little more for the J. You added about 50% to the price.

It looks like he hasn't drilled the holes yet, just laid the pickguard on top and took the photo.

The switch 'died?' That might just mean you have to go in and re-solder one of the connections. Even if you can't solder or don't know what you're doing, it should be a quick and easy fix for a tech if the S1 switch is anything like the common push/pull series mod. Good luck.
