How to choose a first time 5 string?

Agree with many above. As one who started out on 4s but eventually switched to MOSTLY playing on 5s, I found string spacing to be perhaps the most important issue. My first 5 that I played a lot was a Stingray Special with 17.5mm spacing. While I was able to get around OK on it, it never felt...

    Fodera Club Part XXVII

I actually had a Purple Heart YYS a few years back but sold it when I was getting more into 5-stringers. I still play 5's (mostly FBass) in my band but over the past few months have become obsessed with Victor Wooten and learning double thumbing and just couldn't resist the GAS to pick up...

    Fodera Club Part XXVII

Look what just arrived from Sweetwater today. Yin Yang 4 Standard Special with Ivory Wood top. Got a decent deal on an open box demo. Letting it sit in the case overnight to acclimate from the cold, cold trip. Can't wait to play it tomorrow!

Strings are an ENTIRELY subjective thing of course. But my current main squeeze for my VF5 is DR Lo Riders 40-120. I find them very versatile for all genres and their tension and size are perfect - for me.

I have a BN5 roasted ash / ebony and a BN5 Deluxe ash / maple. There is definitely more versatility with the deluxe and since I play in a cover band that covers a wide variety of genres, that can come in handy. However…most commonly I leave those switches in the single coil setting, where it...

Agree about Marcel and the F-Bass team. First class all the way! So glad I live a 45-min drive from them! But my bank account isn’t…LOL…

One of my fav FBass finishes. I have a BN5 in roasted ash with an ebony fingerboard which is my #1. Gotta say though…although I’ve never tried a Trickfish preamp, it is beyond me why anyone would swap out an FBass preamp. I can’t imagine a better sounding pre. It’s one of the reasons I have...

    How To Blow Your Audition

Yeah…I’d say right now I’m around 3/5 of the way there LOL. In my current band there are 3 of us (myself, guitarist, drummer) who basically arrive 1 to 2 hours early to set up (depending on venue and requirements) and stay until the last piece of everyone’s equipment is packed up in the car...

    How To Blow Your Audition

The way it SHOULD work in an ideal situation is everyone should help each other load / unload equipment until all is done. Everyone’s instruments and the PA are at the service of the whole band’s performance. Of course that rarely happens in real life, but that’s what SHOULD happen.

    How To Blow Your Audition

Not the same. It sounds like quite the PA and if everyone has IEMs you don’t even need a bass amp, just a DI into the PA. A PA like that truly is for the whole band and your bass amp is really just for you.

    Club Fbass (thread 13)

This stuff is all subjective of course. What works for one bassist doesn't work for all. And as a relatively recently converted guitarist who took up bass more seriously only 3-4 years ago, I can't claim to have tried all of the competitors. However, I have had a large quantity of basses come...

Agree. I have now FOUR F Basses. Got bitten by the FBass bug around 8 months ago. Have a BN5, Deluxe BN5, VF5 and recently added a used AC5 which is currently being serviced by the fine folks at F Bass. If I had to choose just one? It would be the BN5. Without question. An absolute beast...

I have a VF5 with Aguilar JJ pickups. Overall I love FBasses - the ergonomics, balance, preamp…but would agree that the Aguilars aren’t great and were I ordering custom I’d go with the Alleva pickups. I find the Aggies can get a nice sound if I dial down the passive tone control a smidge...
