For a fairly traditional tube overdrive type sound, I use the Sansamp VT Bass. It keeps low end just fine, and just adds a preamp gain type drive sound.

I would say start with that list, check out there websites, and then browse their list of dealers. If you can find one near you, chances are they specialize in those sorts of custom shop basses - then you could get your fingers on one of those beauties.

I would agree with Deluxe on this, but if you are used to the active humbucker type sound of the schecter, you could try a Music Man. Much better built than your current bass, made in USA and matches your price range.
