The last thing I'll ever say about shorts...

For people who take issue with wearing shorts:

All the different opinions and interest about wearing shorts onstage around here had me wondering... is the do/don't wear shorts line generational? Is it about being playing for fun vs money? Is is about gender?

Results are not public, so don't worry about outing yourself as an Old or an amateur.

My own opinion is that I don't care what a band wears*, I'm a dude, and I'm under 50 but not by a whole lot.

*exception: if they have themed "costumes" that specifically add to the performance, like the Who's jumpsuits or Nation of Ulysses' tailored suits or whatever Parliament comes up with.

Because I'm a social scientist and stuff like this interests me, I will throw out the possibility that geographical and job factors might also contribute to the attitudes toward shorts. I'm 43, female, live in the icebox that is northwestern Pennsylvania, and teach at a college that has no dress code for faculty (some of my coworkers think this give them permission to look homeless or like they're going to the beach). If it's hot, I will wear shorts on stage and during summer school. If I were still living in Texas, I'd probably wear them most of the year.

One comment - I'll bet that if you ask anyone who attends your gigs what the band was wearing - they could not tell you ! As long as you are neat and clean, it is not a problem ! I once played with a band that wanted to wear tux pants and ruffled shirts at EVERY gig ! The drummer and I told them that we were not going to do that, and I told them that if they needed someone that would wear the costume - they could replace me. We won that one !
