The Squier Mini Precision Bass Club

To whom it may concern -

if you feel pure nickel rounds of normal gauge may do for you, check out the Pyramid 820 set, made for the Höfner Shorty bass (I assume both the original - 1982-86 - 28" scale strung-through Model 187, and the modern, 30" scale toploading reissue):
Here
Pyramid 800 Superior Pure Nickel Rock 045/105, 34,90 €
Pyramid 800 Superior Pure Nickel Rock 045/105, 34,90 €
the winding length, ball to taper, is clearly described as being 81 [EDIT:] 31.89" long, which (if true) should be...short enough for the Squier Mini P, IIUC.

Hmm, not so sure. I have a 30" scale Samick 'P-bass' with standard Pyramid Gold flats on it, and they are clearly longer than what fit the bass. More information is required...

All other "short-scale" strings by Pyramid are indeed longish, at about 33.5" winding length ball to taper, and more tailored toward violin basses (back in the day the Pyramid and Höfner "plants" were opposite each other, IIRC, and the former company still makes strings for the latter AFAIK) than conventional, top-loading, non-tailpieced short-scalers. The set I linked to is no exception, as far as having been designed for a Höfner model, but an exception as to winding length, precisely because the Shorty Bass - and the newer solid-body Shorty Violin Bass - are the only short-scale Hoffie basses that are trapeze tailpiece-less, and in so being have a shorter winding length requirement than their brethren (but in turn comparable to most short-scale models by other brands).

In...short, I've no doubt the 820 set is not as long as your Gold flat set (which wouldn't fit a Shorty Bass correctly). However, I can't guarantee it is really under 32" as claimed: it might turn out exactly 32" or 32.25", which would be that annoying smidgen too long for the Mini P.

Good points all. My concern was just cautionary.
Interested in finding out if anyone tries out these sets on an actual Mini?

Well, it pains me, but I think it's time to let my Mini go. My wife needs to undergo chemotherapy and I need the money more than this little fella. I think you all might appreciate what I've done to it more than anyone else, so I figured, hey, I'll let these knuckleheads have the first crack at it. Everything on it has been replaced or modified. The only stock items are the pickguard screws and the string tree. :roflmao:

As far as I know, this is the only sunburst Mini with a gold aluminum pickguard out there. :D

Mods/Upgrades:
3 color sunburst finish in Nitro
Electronics and bridge from a 60's Classic Vibe PBass
Gold anodized aluminum pickguard
Full size strap buttons
LaBella Limited Run Mini scaled flatwound strings
Vintage amber finish in Nitro on neck and head
Walnut insert around truss rod access
Custom gold foil decal to mimic the Classic Vibe decal
Hipshot lightweight clover tuners

I know this isn't a "For Sale" thread, so I won't say it's for sale or post a price. Feel free to message me if you are interested or want to share an encouraging word. :)

Not that there's anything wrong with the stock tuners on my Mini, and only because I like modding, can someone confirm what size tuners the Mini takes? Are they 3/8"?
Correct 3/8"

I love your Mini. Your work has truly been an inspiration to me.

Because of your posts on here I am planning on doing my own burst. Will be either with the Mini or a Bronco bass I picked up.

1. I DID NOT Have to enlarge the cavity. But, if I did, I have a can of shielding paint on my bench. No, it was a little tight fitting it into the cavity cleanly. Trust me, if you take your time, you can do it without scratching the paint (which I did). It's like when I replaced the custom harness into my DAngelico SS. It just takes time, and patience, to fit properly, without damaging anything in the process. As I said before, TLC. :)
2. Staining your fretboard can have side issues! (I've been doing this stuff for 40+ years). Eventually (no matter how smoothly you apply it) dark stain will begin to wear in spots, and look worse than when you started (unless you constantly monitor it, and re-apply that same stain. Even then, it will tend to develop lighter streaks which are uneven) A better long-term option is to regularly use Lemon Oil (first), and maybe a little Musi-Nomad F-1 oil (on top) to naturally darken and seal it. I used that method on my Pau Ferro strat board and also my Mini board (to safely darken them), and it worked great. They are not coal black or anything like that, but dark enough to make me happy. In fact, that Pao Ferro Strat board looks even better (and darker) the more I play on it, over time. No, It's not from getting dirty, I keep them clean using Lizard-Spit pads. :)
I have the Dunlop lemon oil but I've only used it when I got the Mini almost 2 years ago. Since it has flats and I don't gig it, I haven't had to oil the fretboard again.

I'm really sorry your wife and you are going through this. Sending you all positive vibes from Poland.

Your Mini is really beautiful. I'm sure it will go to someone who will love it and play it the way it deserves.
But really, you couldn't be bothered to splurge on new pickguard screws and a new string tree, you cheapskate?! :)

Oh no!!! I am so sorry to hear this!!! I hope everything goes ok!

Hello everyone!
I have read up til page 14 but this thread is over 190 pages long, so forgive me if these questions habe been answered before but:
- what's the consensus on flats/tapes? Is the custom made set the only way to go? Without modding the bass, i mean...
- imagine i want a Daphne Blue or Surf Green Mini P, could this be done getting one of those, sanding the finish a little bit & speay painting over it? Would the red version be best in terms of undercoat colour?

I’ve only had the custom La Bella flats on mine, and only tried tapes on a bass once before. Custom strings are the safest bet to ensure you don’t break a string, but as you’ve read, some folks have used short scale stock sets just fine.

You certainly can scuff the paint and spray over it, but it will take a lot of effort to get a nice finish. I would coat over black rather than red.

If you dig back a few pages someone posted not too long ago some pictures of a Mini P they had sprayed green. You should be able to spot it easily as there were several pictures. If I remember correctly they began with a red Mini P.

I wish you the best for your wife. I have been undergoing chemo for 2 years. Beautiful bass.

Okay thanks! I'll try to find that!

I think that be me? So you don't have to dig:
