25" scale micro basses anyone?

So, so, so... well: I definitely wanted to try the mini bass route and see if they are really worth the effort and the money. Surely, I don't have 2000 spare euro in the pocket for a beautiful Mayones Cali 4 bass...

Cali 4 • Mayones Guitars & Basses

And in addition I would say that, even if they are absolutely little works of art, I am not intrigued by the fact that this very refined, high luthiery, high cost little bass has the nut that starts physically where the 12th fret on a standard 34" scale bass is.

(If I understood it right, the Cali 4 scale it's sort of a half regular scale).

Nor I am keen to spend a lot on the beautiful Vimana....

Then there is the Squier mini-Precision, that is just 2 inches less than a standard 30" short scale. Sexy; and you can personalize it as a regular P. But it's still far from the travel bass concept. So, finally I pulled the trigger on this one below:

NBD: Rocktile TB-4 (aka Glarry CW101) 25" scale mini-bass

Not too costly and different from the standard products. The overall look is sort of a mini Warwick. Well: I must say that after a few days of honeymoon, I am VERY satisfied by this little bass, that is tuned EADG standard and that responds very well (extremely well!) to the bassplayer hand touch. Finally, its sound is the sound of a... bass guitar!!!

Any other 25" bass out there worth looking at? Opinions? Desires? Prices? Availabilities? Pictures? Carrots, maybe? :)

@Djadja yes, I know that! It was exactly THAT video that hit my brain! A small and excellent little bass, at a very low cost. :) Thank you.

P.S.: the one reviewed is a Glarry CW-101. Mine is a Rocktile TB-4. (Glarry minibass not available in Europe) but obviously it is exactly the same instrument. :)

Glarry makes one that is less rounded

A brand named ‘Glen Burton’ has had one for almost 5 years now and I’ve only ever seen it on Regurge and Fleabay.

Well... mine (Rocktile) is not rounded at all. And is the twin to the Glarry one. In any case, rounded or not, it is evident that it is the same bass with different names. It is found under the Rocktile name here in Europe. I guess that in other countries some distibutors put other names and sell them as well. You can find the Rocktile minibass at Amazon, as well as the Glarry one. Glarry does not ship to Europe. :)

Interesting the Glen Burton price: 195 usd. The Rocktile only costs 130 and the Glarry something more. I paid mine (B-stock) 103 euro plus 15 shipping Germany - Italy

I recall when the GB model was $119 around when it came out.
Was always intrigued but never jumped… not yet anyway.

I’m surprised Harley Benton doesn’t make one

Is the the Glarry/Glen Burton solid-body a piccolo bass?

If not, what sort of strings are they using?

My guitar-scale acoustics have had nylon-core roundwounds, which gives them a warm, punchy tone with good harmonic content and decent intonation up to the 12th fret or a little better.

In my experiments with steel-core rounds and flats on shorter scales, I've been disappointed by the hollow tone, poor intonation and odd harmonics I got when I tried for E to G standard bass tuning below 28". Especially on the E and A strings...

25 inch scale? Why not just buy a PRS guitar whose scale length is 25”, tune it down one octave lower and have a 6 string 25” scale bass?
At the very minimum you'd have to file the nut and maybe the bridge to use the string gauge used on a dedicated micro scale bass. And last I remember PRS aren't exactly budget friendly, you'll end up spending more for a home made bass VI'esque conversion, which is not the same thing as a dedicated 4 string micro scale.

No, it is a real bass, but could easily be a piccolo bass.

They’re steel round wound strings with a metal core.

Any bass regardless of size can be a piccolo bass.

What determines a piccolo bass is the type of strings on the bass.

I have a hunch that if you try that out, you will find the answer to your question.
