Double Bass First real foray into synthetic gut strings - WOW

After spending a few years using all of the usual strings sold as having gut like properties I finally started using plain gut on A D and G and was finally happy. The E string still ends up being a synthetic. Still on the quest for a favorite E hah. A good compromise set I stuck with for about...

Double Bass La Bella introduces new upright bass string line at Namm

Any updates on the new strings? Gollihur music had a placeholder listing for them but no longer. Can't find anything when I was searching on the Labella website. Was really hoping we could get a less expensive string similar to an Olive. Always wanted a set but can't justify $800 before tax price.

Double Bass Thinking of trying Gamut guts, what gauge?

Played a gig last night only hrs after putting the new strings on. I slapped off and, on all afternoon, and that seemed to get allot of the stretching done so I had little issue with tuning stability. I did notice that the Gamut's are louder than my Evah slaps. That and the dynamic range...

Double Bass Thinking of trying Gamut guts, what gauge?

Ok! The Lyon G and Pistoy D showed up. Put them on this morning and omg yes. The D in particular is amazing. All the guys raving about the D string are 1000% correct. I'm officially part of the Gamut fan club. I went with the varnish option and am really liking the feel. Not sure how long the...

Double Bass Thinking of trying Gamut guts, what gauge?

Well now, I feel like a doofus. On Gamut's web site they list their string tensions. I'll link it if anyone else finds this thread and has the same question. https://www.gamutmusic.com/contrabass-tensions/ I think for now I will order a D and G and see how it goes. I've never met a wound gut...

Good point sir. That will certainly be a consideration on the Upton.

Double Bass Thinking of trying Gamut guts, what gauge?

I've a 5/8 flat back Bohemian w/removable neck in process. I'm a short stack at 5'7 so after speaking with Gary we both agreed the slightly small size would work for me well. I'll keep my current bass and also considered setting it up for arco as well. Its good to have more than one bass!

Double Bass Thinking of trying Gamut guts, what gauge?

I was eyeballing the red diamonds but in other threads its been mentioned that they are higher tension than pain gut. I figured they would be difficult to slap on but can't really say.

Double Bass Thinking of trying Gamut guts, what gauge?

EP slaps are not bad strings at all, but they have don't have the dynamic range of gut or the airiness. Again, they are excellent strings, but I always revert back to gut after a while. Been considering a more premium brand as I have an Upton being built and am considering what I want it set up...

Double Bass Thinking of trying Gamut guts, what gauge?

I play approx. 50/50 mix between pizz and slap. My group does a mishmash of what I think of as Americana. Country oldies, bluegrass, rockabilly, folk, a swing tune now and then and even a little Latin music. Since they don't list string tension I'm at a loss as to which set would both sound...

So I'm trying to learn how to run a smaller rig and use the PA.....and my sound sucks!

The PA is two Mackie thump 18 subs and two Mackie 15A tops. Seems they were doing it due to something going on with a crossover. So they panned kick drum and bass to one side and everything else was going to the tops. I'm gonna ask if we can just start charging enough to bring a sound person...

So I'm trying to learn how to run a smaller rig and use the PA.....and my sound sucks!

I did a bit of searching but didn't find an exact answer. I know this has to have been asked before but..... Here's the deal. Lately I've been bringing smaller rigs just for stage volume and the sound out front is a total mess with the bass. We don't have a sound person and everyone is in the...

GK Legacy 800 line out clipping the board.

Thx for the input all. I have 3 gigs this weekend so I'll try out everyone's suggestions.

The 800 does not have a pad button and the board input was turned down all the way. Crazy stuff.

GK Legacy 800 line out clipping the board.

Been gigging my Legacy 800 head and keep running into an issue. The output on the DI is so hot its clipping the mixer. I don't see a way to adjust the line out level. Unless I'm missing something here. Been having to add a DI pedal to my pedalboard. None of my preamp/DI pedals are clipping...

    Question for Dingwall D-Roc owners

I've been eyeballing the D-Roc for some time but I wonder. How does it feel in the ergonomics dept vs a normal body style bass with an upper horn? In the past when I've picked up basses where the strap was located higher than the 12th fret it resulted in the reach to the nut being further away...

How to you set your active bass controls?

Thx for the feedback all. Gigs will be starting up again for me in the next few weeks and that will be the real test. I noticed today when I decided to plug into my Tech 21 Dug pedal by B string was overloading something if I even slighting started digging in. More experimenting to do!

How to you set your active bass controls?

In 2020 after many many years of only playing passive basses I got to fooling with active basses. My Ibanez EHB 5 string is getting the most love right now. When I first got it I wasn't to impressed with the sound. But then I saw a video where David Ellefson said he cranked all the...

Who all makes tilt back combo's now days?

I'm wanting to pick up a tilt back combo with a good DI. I basically need it to be loud enough to make a good stage monitor while the DI is run to FOH. Several of the little bars I played before Covid would cram everyone into a corner and I was encouraged to just use a DI pedalboard setup...

Gallien Krueger Club. GK Rules !

Tricks to get the E string on a mustang to cut though?

Tricks to get the E string on a mustang to cut though?

I recently entered the world of mustang basses and fell in love with blue JMJ model. That neck is sooo good. I play is all the time at home. Rounds for a JMJ mustang

Just got a JmJ in last week and I'm pondering the same thing. In this YouTube clip I liked the rounds better than the Fender flats. I've got a set of Chromes and a set of EXL rounds on the way to test out.

So I splurged for the TI flats for my birdsong short scale.

My C bass showed up a day early. I popped on the E string out of the TI "short scale" set and strung it through the body. Worked out well!

So I splurged for the TI flats for my birdsong short scale.

I'll post Friday after the bass arrives with an update on the TI short scale set. The package says good for 32" scale so maybe they will work top loaded. Dunno. I'll have to wait n see.

So I splurged for the TI flats for my birdsong short scale.

I have a Birdsong C bass sowing up Friday. Shipped with Chromes but I have a set of the short scale TI flats that may fit it. The band I'm in currently does lots of 70s rock so I'm waffling on keeping flats on it or popping a set of Rotosound on there. My first birdsong. Scotts version of...

Have you played on a moving stage?

Sort of. Played a wedding on the upper deck of a 2 story party barge. The lake was really choppy and the wind was up. Felt sick the entire gig. Felt better after getting paid $1000 for my effort tho!
  32. DeepSouth

    Do I really need a 610 or 410?

I love my 610 Fender Neo cab. Has wheels and is easy to move and load. Do I always need that much? No but it feels and sounds sooo good.
  33. DeepSouth

Was this an appropriate way to be fired?

"They'd spent 4 years writing songs but hadn't done a gig yet...I'd say you were just saved lots of wasted time. Any band that's been together for 4 years and never played a gig is a red flag if there ever was one.

    Nordstrand powerblade vs Dimarzo DP127

Interesting, I always assumed there would be issues with string output if the poles didn't line up. I'll have to experiment. The EMG Geezer is my go to on my Fender P. And I just happen to have a spare set for a project that never got built.

    Nordstrand powerblade vs Dimarzo DP127

Reading the specs these look very similar. Both are split bade P bass pickups. Ceramic magnets on both. Both seem to have scooped mids. The DP127 is described as having increased bottom and top end While the Nordstrand lists increased bottom and a smooth stop. I ask because I have a 31"...

Thomastik JF324 - is the E string good on short scale basses?

I read an old thread and it was suggested to use Eucerin hand cream on them. I tried it a few months back when I replaced my TI flats on my P bass. It worked pretty well. It made them sound broken in enough so it didn't bother me to play on them while waiting for them to hit that magic point...

Are 5 strings on the way out?

So I read this entire thread and my first thought was. If fives are going away then Ibanez must not know the market very well. Them releasing a new line of headless multiscale 5 string basses in spring of 2020!

    Why play a four string?

I've struggled with this. Always liked 4 string. Had a 5 in the 90s but let it go pretty quickly. However I recently picked up a used 5 to noodle on and it makes many of the tunes from the 2000s sound better with the extra beef. Its too dam heavy tho to play all night. When that Ibanez EBH...

    SBMM Stingray Short scale
