    p-bass vs j-bass

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that there aren't too many P vs J threads. As this argument has been going on without a definitive answer for years, I think it's a valid question. It's a question that needs to be discussed. We should probably just sticky a Precision vs Jazz...

    Recommend me a good strap.

I have the Planet Waves Satriani strap shown on the left on my J. My Les Paul electric has a standard Planet Waves. I love both of the straps, but the Satriani one feels really nice; it's like a comfortable bookbag strap. I wouldn't recommend it, though, if the standard strap you have is...

    p-bass vs j-bass

Your GAS list has a Fender Jaguar on it. Why not just get that? It's like a J on steroids.

Helps them with rhythm and time, though. I can guarantee you that playing Dance Dance Revolution in high school gave me a solid idea of what different BPMs feel like.

    Vintage Modified ... Modified

Looks like a winning idea. They remind me of Alnico Les Paul pickups.

Yeah, they probably should have gone with a "Geek Squad"-like model for instruments. I bet a few of the employees in automotives would have some expertise in pro audio, though.

    Best Buy Music Center

The lack of negotiable pricing is a killer when you combine that with the bloated vintage speculation market and the shadiness of eBay and craigslist. The net effect is that, unless you want to take a big risk with private sellers, "getting a good deal" is entirely dictated by the Guitar Center...

Fender Prices - Going Back Down

I don't mind seeing a million threads about price drops. It's the million "bad news and despair" threads that annoy me. On a similar note, I haven't lost faith in Fender. If the price is right, I'm going to buy from Fender again.

Band Rehearsal Game #1 - Sabbath Edition

I'd go with Randy Rhoades. Given the needs of the genre currently, I'd argue that he has the right combination of balls and flash required to propel a band to superstardom.

Band Rehearsal Game #1 - Sabbath Edition

Situation: Your hard rock/heavy metal originals band is run democratically and you're holding rehearsals for a new lead guitarist. After careful consideration, your bandmates cast votes for Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, and Tony Iommi. All are at their peak, alive and well. You, the bassist, get...

P or J - Have we all chosen correctly?

YES Just hoping for a 5 string P Deluxe with J neck at summer NAMM...

P or J - Have we all chosen correctly?

After spending some time with a Precision, I think Jazz was definitely the way to go for a rookie. The thinner neck makes all the difference those first few weeks of playing.

    Thinking about a 5 string...

So, I think I may go with a 4 string Fender P and a T-Bird Pro V... Along with my Jazz, I'd have a holy trio.

P or J - Have we all chosen correctly?

...and if he said that, he would be right. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2000/10/02/net_builders_kahn_cerf_recognise/ Certainly says something about being historically accurate. Let's get off the nitpicking and back to substantive discussion, please?

    Thinking about a 5 string...

I'd get a vicious eye-roll... Random Q: How much should I expect to pay someone to install a Precision pickup on a 5 string Jazz bass? Talkbass is winning me over and I'm warming up to Fenders.
  18. G

    who invented the P/J configuration?

He actually did create the modern internet: Link Removed Anyway, back to the topic- Why doesn't Fender just drop a J pickup into all their non-"Vintage" P basses? It's not like it'll cannibalize Jazz bass sales.

Yeah, most deffo a song where roots keep the track flowing. EDIT- Sorry for the bump. I've got the song stuck in my head. It just won't escape.

What's the difference between the Stiletto and Omen? The hardware and specs look identical.

    Thinking about a 5 string...

I'll give the Stiletto line a try tomorrow. I remember seeing only one at Guitar Center the last time I went. Do they understock on them?

    Thinking about a 5 string...

Ok, so I have a four string Fender Jazz. It's a great instrument and does everything I need for a four stringer. Now that I'm in the market for a five, I'm looking for some variety to get a whole new set of tonal possibilities. Based on what I'm looking for, I'm looking at- 1- Five Strings...

    Guitarist gone bass...

Ehhhh, he's smart but not very tactful. I think the point is to learn the basics and go in your own direction after that. There is a three finger technique, though- Invalid Link Removed Some people also do gallops with three fingers.

SX vs American and MIM Fender...

Even on a corporate level, you would think a company would want their "top of the line" model to be uniformly better in every case. This isn't just a Fender criticism, though.
  26. G

SX vs American and MIM Fender...

I think, more than anything, this speaks poorly of QC. If a company is going to sell a set of instruments for over a grand, there shouldn't be any "duds".
  27. G

Beautiful bass - bad company logo!!!!

    Jackson has a great logo.

Would you go boutique or vintage?

As some others mentioned: If I had $4,000 in my pocket, I'd probably go with "interesting" basses, as opposed to vintage or boutique. Bicentennial Thunderbird $2,200 Grabber $950 Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V $850 Just as an example.

    lenny kravitz 4 string policy..

200 auditioners multiplied by 2 songs at 3 minutes each equals 1,200 minutes. That's 20 hours of playing, not including introductions. Think logically.
  30. G

    Why own several identical basses?

I like having a variety of options available to me, but I can understand someone finding the right type of bass and sticking with it.
  31. G

    lenny kravitz 4 string policy..

It was an audition for his band that was playing his music. This isn't like some needy 16 year old primadonna with ego-issues- he's been playing professionally for 20 years. So, if you consider playing X strings on Y body in Z band being a whore, then you probably wouldn't be at that audition...

    Which hand is lagging behind?

There always seems to be one hand (the picking/fingering or fretting) that lags behind when practicing. Sometimes it alternates due to the type of things you play or your methods, or simply that the type of music you play requires more work from one hand as opposed to the other. Other times...

What song did you learn RIGHT NOW?

That would be my only crime here. I chose this forum because it's a general topic on bass playing.
  36. G

What song did you learn RIGHT NOW?

I don't agree with that. You can be a bassist without being retentive about theory. It doesn't mean you're just a human jukebox, either. There is a benefit to learning songs (rhythm, timing, dexterity) even when you don't break it down to its tiniest minutiae, and it's unrealistic to expect...

What song did you learn RIGHT NOW?

I would tend to disagree with that. You can pick up theory while you play. Bass is a logical instrument. You can't pick up hands-on technique while you discuss II-V-I over an internet forum.
  38. G

What song did you learn RIGHT NOW?

My general point, and what you've touched on, is that, to a relatively newer instrumentalist, it serves as a great benefit to see a general system that notes technical difficulty and recommends something that may be more in line with a current skill level. It's the whole concept behind having a...
