After spending some time with a Precision, I think Jazz was definitely the way to go for a rookie. The thinner neck makes all the difference those first few weeks of playing.

So, I think I may go with a 4 string Fender P and a T-Bird Pro V... Along with my Jazz, I'd have a holy trio.

I think, more than anything, this speaks poorly of QC. If a company is going to sell a set of instruments for over a grand, there shouldn't be any "duds".

200 auditioners multiplied by 2 songs at 3 minutes each equals 1,200 minutes. That's 20 hours of playing, not including introductions. Think logically.

I don't agree with that. You can be a bassist without being retentive about theory. It doesn't mean you're just a human jukebox, either. There is a benefit to learning songs (rhythm, timing, dexterity) even when you don't break it down to its tiniest minutiae, and it's unrealistic to expect...

I would tend to disagree with that. You can pick up theory while you play. Bass is a logical instrument. You can't pick up hands-on technique while you discuss II-V-I over an internet forum.
