Add new material 5 hours before load-in?

When I played in a country band, the BL would frequently get a request for something we'd never played. He'd call out the changes and we'd go. Of course, he'd been a country BL for about 100 years, and knew what would work and what wouldn't. Blues bands are the same. Prog/Metal, not so much .

So, what were you doing 30 years ago?

Not what I said, what you inferred. What I like or don't like has no bearing on what other people like or don't like. What was popularly accepted as "Best of the 90s" didn't do it for me, but lots of good music has been made in every decade. It just isn't always easy to find. One of the great...

So, what were you doing 30 years ago?

Recovering from the breakup of the best band I'd ever been in. Not listening to music at all, other than old jazz. TBH, I missed most of the 90s, and when I finally started listening again I was, like, guess I didn't miss much....

    Recording interface hardware issues

Sometimes you get a bad piece of HW. Make sure you have the latest drivers and check often for new ones, they update them often. Also, avoid plugging into a Hub. If you have to use a Hub, use one that's powered. That's all I got!

    Recording interface hardware issues

How different everyone's systems and experiences are. I've been working with PCs (former IT Pro, retired) since before there was Windows. I've never been able to get ASIO4ALL to work well on any system. My 2nd gen Scarlett 18i20 with the latest drivers (HP-Envy Laptop, i7-7500u, 16gb, 500gb ssd...

So what does "punch" mean, anyway?

Punch is like porn - hard to describe, but you know it when you feel it! My favorite tone term is from guitar players - "chewy". ***?

Uncomfortable right lap - is it normal or am I doing wrong?

It looks to me like you're slouching down in the chair. Your stomach is actually pushing the bass away from you. Pull your butt in, shoulders back, straighten your spine, and get a proper footrest as pictured earlier.

    Basic Needs for Scarlett

All I mean is that OP's needs are really basic, and things like MPE are way beyond what he's asking.

    Basic Needs for Scarlett

And here's a link to a list of DAWs that are already MPE compatible, including Reaper and Bandlab Cakewalk (free DAW): MPE MIDI Polyphonic Expression ROLI Compatible apps synths : ROLI Support I'm just a simple Rocker, so I don't see myself needing this real soon, and it's not really relevant...

    Basic Needs for Scarlett

OK, I googled it. You don't NEED a MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) enabled DAW. You just need to set up a MPE Template in a DAW that can can record multiple tracks simultaneously. How to Set Up MPE in DAWs that Don’t Support It It being the latest greatest cool electronic music thing, I'm...

    Basic Needs for Scarlett

As others have said, the track # limitation in Ableton Lite may cause you to need to upgrade, and the first level upgrade is <>$300. Worth it only if you're doing modern electronic music and heavily dependent on Loops, at which Ableton has no peer. If that's not the case, go straight to Reaper...

    Sweetwater and Guitar Center Calling

I've bought a lot of stuff from both GC and SW, going back to the '70s for GC. SW calls me once to see how I like my thingy, did it arrive on time, packaging - common sense customer relations stuff. My "Sales Rep" calls a couple of times a year to say "Hi". I say "Hi". They email me every day...

Have you Lost all faith in Endorsing Artist Credibility? I have.

Zombie thread! I may have said this before, but...... Not ALL product endorsers are lying slime suckers. Anybody who buys something JUST because somebody endorsed it IS an idiot. Caveat Emptor applies. ALWAYS!

GC snubs us bass players again

I also found it interesting that there were a bunch of artist interviews which seemed to be designed to convince moms and dads that musicians were actually really cool people whose main purpose in playing music was to serve a HIGHER PURPOSE. Not the crass degenerates that everybody knows we...

How to get a throaty sound, not boomy?

This post should be in Bass Humor. OP: Here's a picture of a bass player. How do I get THAT sound? 14 people try to explain how to get (or not get) the sound in the picture. No offense to anybody, but I want to know what the picture TASTES like........

They did, for a while. They did an an awful job. Made the worst GC look good!

GC snubs us bass players again

To be fair, those mfrs' terms prohibit GC from including them in those promotions. Most of the time, if you ask, you'll get the discount, because the mfrs can't prevent GC from selling their products at whatever price they choose.

NYC What Are You Waiting For

I left there in 1970 when I was 20. Before that it was like rural NJ, woods and fields (South Shore, the North shore was always kinda funky). People who lived there were either born there (many on farms) or, like my family, moved there from places like Hell's Kitchen when we'd EARNED enough...

NYC What Are You Waiting For

You gotta problem wit' da Island? I grew up there. Was a great place till it became a dumping ground for everything Manhattan wanted to hide. The VZ Bridge didn't help either. I used to run (yeah, mid-70s) a single throat Peavey/CV 18" folded horn with a 100 watt (I think) Vox some-kinda Super...

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but....

Because EVERYONE KNOWS that the BEST shoe for anyone is the one that the Manufacturer discontinued. You know, the one you bought last year that you thought "FINALLY! Somebody made a shoe I like! I'm going to buy another pair just like it next year!" Makes sense to somebody.........think about THAT!

Good alternative to GarageBand ( windows 10 PC)

Sounds like you have the experience and realistic enough expectations to make it work! There will be a learning curve with Reaper coming from the much simpler GB, but the docs are excellent and the Cockos forum is great.

Good alternative to GarageBand ( windows 10 PC)

This is very true. If you are able to add memory, that will help, but by the time you do that and add an ssd, you'll still have a very minimal DAW machine. Not unusable by any means, but as soyua said, limited as to the number of tracks, VSTs and effects you can use, and possibly having...

Good alternative to GarageBand ( windows 10 PC)

Another vote for Reaper. Bandlab/Cakewalk (my first DAW) is pretty but not nearly as good as Reaper. You mentioned Loops. You can run the FREE version of Ableton Live 10 (Lite) into Reaper via Rearoute. An APC mini grid controller is $99 (ask Santa?), and you'll have a killer rig.

    Would you take this gig?

Been there, done that, more than once. I'd ask for a song list with keys. Tell them if there's enough tunes you know and/or feel good about, cool. If they won't/can't do at least that, they don't need you and it's probably gonna turn out like twofingers said, you'll look like a fool and your...

    'Bassist Who Enjoy Playing Keyboards'

I've always wanted to try my hand(s) at keys. Some years ago I was at GC and there was a Seiko DS-250 for $80! Think 61 key 80s additive synth - Dave Stewart played one on the first Eurythmics album. Anyhow, never really had time to get into it. Now that I'm retired and have the time, I'm having...

    Best Bass for Metal?

For tone? Anything. Metal has been played on just about every kind of bass there is. There's probably somebody (likely in Japan) playing metal on a Hello Kitty bass. For looks? Something pointy and evil looking. Or a Black Hello Kitty bass. Who's a bad kitty?

LH - Use of ring finger vs pinky (one finger per fret?)

I learned guitar before bass, from a proper guitar teacher. I always used my pinky, and surprised my (3 lessons) bass teacher by using my pinky (on flats no less). While many guitarists don't use their pinkys, when I see one I assume that guitar is their first instrument and they were...
