Anyone compared the TC Spectradrive with SA Zio Bass Pre?

Has anyone used both the TC Spectradrive (my current pre) and the Source Audio Zio bass pre? I find I hardly use the 4-band eq on the Spectradrive, more just the toneprint for a bit of amp like dirt. Looks like the Zio will do the same in a more compact package, with a built in HPF.

    Optical Compressors with blend control.

I'm thinking about a compact optical compressor with a blend control. I've had Diamonds (no blend). The Doc Lloyd Death Ray is unobtanium. The Source Audio Atlas looks interesting ... but the power requirements are too rich for my Cioks DC5 (both 300mA outlets are committed). What other options...

    Orange Terror Bass 500 hiss

I have a latest generation Orange Terror Bass 500 head. It was second hand and I have no idea how old it is. I noticed yesterday there is a little hiss even at low volume, which I am sure wasn't there before and also the gain seems a less drive-y than previously. Is that the ECC83 preamp valve...

Installing wheels on an Ampeg SVT212AV cabinet

I am thinking about installing wheels/castors on my Ampeg SVT212AV cab. Am I better off: 1. drilling through the bass of the cab, bolting on wheels and securing with loctit; 2. attaching wheels with standard wood screws? thanks in advance.

    Orange Amplification

Considering the price of valves has doubled recently (given events/sanctions in Russia and the Slovakian factory being unable to keep up with demand) and the nasty chemicals/metals involved in their manufacture, I am beginning to reconsider my commitment to all valve amplification. My current...

MarkBass LM 800 + external preamp into FX loop

Quick question ... I have a TC Spectradrive Preamp. I presume I can connect the output of the Spectradrive to the FX return of a MarkBass Little Mark 800 and thereby bypass the internal preamp -- is that correct? And the overall volume will still be controlled by the MarkBass master volume...

    6550 glowing plate

Just noticed a hum emanating from my Traynor YBA200/1 (2004). When I looked at the output valves one has an orange glowing plate. Is this what happens when they wear out, or is it indicative of a circuit fault? If I do need to have it revalved, is there any benefit in swapping to KT88s?

TCE Clip Tuner E string tracking?

I have a TCE clip on tuner I use mainly for around the house. It tracks G, D and A strings fine, but struggles with the E string. It's not really a 'problem' as such, as I have a Polytune on my board which works perfectly. I'm curious as to whether this is a common 'feature'.

    Elf or BQ500?

Because I no longer have a lift to band practice and because I don't want to pay to hire an amp, I am thinking about a backup/spare/alternative for my 19kg 200W valve head. I was considering the TC BQ500 (red) because it's the right price and would just about fit in the pocket of my gig bag...

    Wenge/wenge J neck vs maple/rosewood P neck weight?

I am considering replacing the maple/rosewood (Allparts?) P neck on my Fenderbird with an Allparts J neck -- maple/ebony is the most obvious (and CITES compliant) option. The other option I'm considering is a Warmoth wenge/wenge, assuming the J neck would weigh less than my existing P neck...

Darkglass Vintage Ultra ground lift position

Is there anyone who can tell me -- well @Darkglass really -- the reason the ground lift switch is on the right side of the Vintage Ultra enclosure (instead of over next to the XLR)? It's a tiny annoyance on an otherwise oustanding preamp, which means I have to leave a small gap between the DGVU...

    Cheap sample/wav file player

Looking for recommendations for a wav/sample player -- press a button and it plays a prerecorded file. Maybe 8-12 max. Something really simple and cheap.

Whatever happened to the [doofus question answered -- as you were]

There was a post here a few months ago about a new tiny always on TCE tuner? Whatever happened to it?

    Yet another dirt question

I am thinking -- only thinking at this point -- about acquiring some sort of dirt pedal. Dirt has never been my thing as I prefer natural amp overdrive, but I'm getting to a place where another flavour/texture might be useful. Nothing synthi or fizzy sounding. Should have a full low end. I'd...

    SS backup head

I have a 200W valve head feeding a 4Ω 212 600W/1200W cab*. Now my band has the prospect of gigs on the horizon, I'm thinking about a backup, preferably for less than $AU500 ($US360). I'd be perfectly happy with a class A/B lead sled head if it was cheap and rugged. I have the hots for a...

    HH series/parallel and vol/tone bypass

A friend wants to add some switching options on his bass. It has 2 x single conductor humbuckers and is wired VVT (no pickup selector switch). He would like series/parallel and a 'blower' switch for each pickup to connect them directly to the output. I don't have a problem with the...

    Series/parallel + 2 x 'blower' + phase reverse?

Friend of mine is wanting to wire a pair of Gibson humbuckers with the following configuration: 1. series/parallel 2. 'blower' switch for each pickup 3. phase reverse if possible. And all this with standard VVT wiring (no pup selector switch). 1. is simple enough, it's 2. which is giving me a...

Analog Flanger w/ top mount jacks

Currently have a TCE Vortex as my 'fun' pedal. It hardly gets used -- a little flanger goes a long way -- but it's there for when the mood takes me. Two things: 1. It does sound a bit digital/hard/metallic to me and I'm thinking analog would be warmer and lusher. I have no use for the...
