    Strings for Drop D tuning

Hey all I have just discovered the joy of playing in drop D. Since I play short scale that “D” string can get quite floppy. What are your recommendations for a stiff round wound? Nickle or stainless it doesn’t matter.

    Bass Joy/TB Praise

So after a year or two of wondering, should I should buy a preamp or a new amp or a new cabinet or just continue working on my technique? I finally decided to go ahead and buy one. I went with the Underground Accelerator. Oh what a great choice! This thing really makes your bass sing. Exactly...

Fret wear after two plus years?

I’ve owned my short scale stingray for just over 3 years. I play almost everyday and it is the only bass I own. I was surprised to see fret wear already. tHow long do frets typically last before wear becomes and issue? I believe these are nickle frets. Of course I use stainless strings (DR high...

How to achieve a “clanky” tone

Listen to this song. You’ll hear the bass tone right away. I assume this is the clanky sound associated with metal that I’ve heard people discuss. In any case I cannot get anything remotely sounding like this. So TB heads help me out how would you go about trying to get this type of sound?

    You might be a redneck

Good pedal similar to Keeley Gold Star?

Hey y’all I really like the studio/room reverb effect of the Keeley Gold Star. However it’s clearly losing a lot of low end. Any similar style reverb pedals out there that can handle bass better? I have already tried the Keeley Caverns and own a CSIDMAN. FWIW the CSIDMAN is a really fun pedal...

    Eden Amps No More?

I had heard someone on here mention the brand was being wrapped up and that seems to have come to fruition. The Marshall website no longer has Eden listed as a brand. Bummer as they had a nice sound and I enjoy my TN226 and cab. But at least I was able to snag it on a clearance price I guess.

    Alternative to clip on tuner?

I have one of those Daddario micro clip on tuners. I really like it but it has this weird habit sometimes of just turning off. I’ll try putting in a new battery but nothing works. I’ll come back to it the next day and it works fine. This is the third time this has happened now so I’m curious...

    NAD - Eden TN226

My first separate head and cab. Was previously using an old Ampeg 115 combo that weighed almost half as much as me. Needed a lighter, more powerful rig that I can take to rehearsals and gigs since I'm ready to start looking for a band (already secured the gig with the temple band). After...

    Van Morrison’s bassist

Anyone know who the bassist is in this video? He might be the coolest dude ever and I have no idea who he is. He shows up at the 1:30 mark. Although it’s a terrific performance worth watching.

    Adam Clayton on Achtung Baby

I know he doesn't get much love on here, but I just listened to Achtung Baby for the first time in a long time and I have to say his bass playing on that album is fantastic. Great grooves and tone all around. In fact one of the biggest hits from the album (Mysterious Ways) was built around the...

    NBD

Just a Sterling short scale Stingray. Haven’t played on it much yet. Will probably put on some flats. Any suggestions? I’m thinking either Rotosound or LaBella DTB.

    No hum with headphones?

I own a rather noisy Ibanez Mikro. When the pickups are turned up it whines like crazy until I touch the strings. I always assumed this was because it’s a cheap instrument with crappy shielding. But tonight while practicing with headphones I had the pickups turned up all the way and the amp up...

Anyone here using the iZotope Spire?

Came across this on GC the other day. Looks like an excellent package for a hobbyist like myself that would like to make some simple demo tracks/recordings. Just curious if anyone here has experience with it and what their thoughts are. iZotope Spire Studio Portable Wireless Recorder

How much practice before you perform?

As a relative newbie and total amateur musician I am curious to know how many hours you practice a song before you typically feel like you are ready perform it? This would include both solo practice and practicing with your band.

How do you know when a string goes "dead"?

As a new bassist I'm a little confused. I've heard stories about people keeping strings on their bass for years, and I've also heard about people complaining about strings going "dead" after a few weeks, or even out of the box. What does that mean exactly? That it won't stay in tune? Or that it...

Bands all your friends like but you just...

Can’t stand them. As I’ve said before for me Phish is just the worst. Yet for some reason all my friends in college just loved Phish. I don’t hate jam bands: The Dead. Almann Bros even Rusted Root and Dave Matthews are tolerable. There’s just something about Phish that as soon as I hear it I...

Swap out PUPs on Ibanez Mikro

Anyone here done it? Tell me your story. What did you choose? Why did you choose that PUP? What was the result? Any wisdom to impart?
