    Daft Punk Bass Tone

    Alright thanks. Anyone else?
  2. D

    Daft Punk Bass Tone

Yeah I get that, I just feel like it has more smoothness and sustain than I can get with just my p bass, which led me to believe it is either uber compressed or electronic.

    Daft Punk Bass Tone

I am currently recording this song and am going to try and get my bass sound close to the original. Here is the video of the song. I'm really not sure what is going on here. It sounds like it's very compressed, and is possibly being slapped and popped. I'm not even sure it's a real...

Rounds for players who play flats

+1 for sunbeams. Ernie ball stuff has felt really coarse IME. After playing flats for awhile, any roundwound set will feel slightly uncomfortable, but you should get used to it in a week of playing or less.

    Mixing in headphones.

Thanks for all the responses everybody, I think I should just invest in a couple of decent studio monitors after all. Though I am on a budget, I figure I should just spend the money, because if I get a good set I'll be using them for a while, maybe most of my life even. Will most decent...

    Mixing in headphones.

I've been doing some home recordings, and before I mix and master my tracks, I want to make sure I'm doing it right and getting a true representation of my mix. I know mixing on my computer speakers or in cheap listening headphones is hazardous to mixing, and I was wondering if that is the case...

    Favorite fender mods.

Personally, one of my favorite looks (for a jazz bass and otherwise) is getting off-white covers for both pickups.

    Favorite fender mods.

The new neck looks good on the jaguar. That seems like it would be a good bass after proper mods, because I've played it and felt like the preamp and pickups were severely lacking. The neck is really nice though, and I like the matching headstock on the red model.

    Favorite fender mods.

I forgot about the D tuner, thats a good one! and its always debated how much the bridge affects the performance of the istrument, so i havent fiddled with that to much yet. I too am also interested in jaguar mods.

    Favorite fender mods.

What are some of your favorite fender bass mods? Some things you like to do to make your Precision bass or Jazz bass that much better. Exclude obvious string changing, pickup brand replacing, etc... I'll start with mine P-bass: Install bridge pickup, humbucker or jazz bridge cover If...

    Tube amp question

The way I see it, (and I view most of my bass tones like this) is that there should be a good amount of low end, not too much, not too little. thats the part that the bass player has to cover because its his job. Once thats taken care of, the real character of an amp and a bass is all in the...

    Tube amp question

Okay, so in all these opinions, all-tube heads are the glorious things people claim they are. That's good news. I see an Orange AD-200B in my future possibly?

    Tube amp question

Okay, I believe you guys, I just wasn't sure if their was really any issue with the tube power amp section. I figure somebody looking for a tube tone would dig an all-tube head much more, the downsides being reliability/maintenance and expense? Thanks for the info guys.
  15. D

    Tube amp question

Just a really quick question. I was talking to my brother, who's a bit of a guitar gearhead, and much more technologically inclined than myself. I was talking about buying a new head, and was wondering if I should bite the bullet and go all tube, or just get a tube pre amp and solid state power...

Recommend Trio(Piano + Bass Guitar + Drum) Albums?

Madeski, Martin, and Wood. Not an album, but certainly a great group. Not strictly piano, or electric bass either, but it's good.

    Screamo?

People use the term Screamo much too loosely. People who aren't fans of the metal call anything with screamed vocals "Screamo." I personally like basically all metal except screamo stuff. And disturbed kind of stuff, but that's another story

575 watt combo not loud enough!

Not sure if somebody already mentioned this, but your amp may not be putting out its full 575 watts in the configuration its in. With that being said, even 300 watts or some similar fraction of the power should be plenty loud. Other things I think of off the top of my head are possibly not EQed...

    Fitting into the mix

thanks for the post mambo, it was helpful : ) and I have played with some stingy guitarists : P and a guitarist with a valve junior, not much control over EQ there.. thanks everybody this thread has been helpful.

    Fitting into the mix

okay, thanks all. Just have to sort of try different stuff out when I'm playing with a band again.

    Fitting into the mix

so more of a low mid thang?
  22. D

    Fitting into the mix

yeah I was mostly seeing if their was a particular frequency in the midrange or bass i should be worried about. I tend to avoid just boosting treble to cut through, all it really does for me is allows people to hear the clanky trebly part of my bass, which is not what I'm going for. The solidity...

    Fitting into the mix

If I put this in the wrong section, I apologize. I was just wondering some EQing things i can do to fit into a mix better. Just to sort of fulfill my role as the bass player. I know that the bass is more of a midrange oriented instrument, and I should sonically cover a certain space in the mix...

    G&L L2000 questions

Amen to everything in the thread. I haven't played one through my rig, but it definitely satisfied my hardcore p bass needs through the Ashdown I used at GC.

    The much-talked-about Gallien Krueger growl...

I find it really easy to get the GK growl. I just use a passive jazz bass and crank the boost knob, and it's basically there. Extra volume helps alot too, but the boost knob is mainly what you need to get it. This thread has rekindled my GAS for an 800rb, definitely one of my favorite amps...

Digging in and some funky help

I would just recommend learning alot of funk songs. When I get in ruts like this, I look up more songs and play the "good" bass players' lines. I find that gives me a good bit of inspiration.

What Is The oddest gig you've ever played?

I havent had anything too crazy, but a bass player I know once played in a sketch comedy/play/musical pit band, which consisted of him on bass, a guitar player, and a pennywhistle true story

Amp sounds terrible from far away.

Thanks everybody, I'll try it in other environments (rainforest, tundra, deciduous forest) and if it's still a problem I'll revive this thread. Thanks again, God bless

Amp sounds terrible from far away.

Yeah that might just be it. Has this happened to anybody else here before? It'd be awful comforting if it has. No, not just the middle of the room it sounds bad everywhere except in front of it. Thanks jimmy, I just didn't want to show up at a gig and have it sound terrible. I'll try it...

Amp sounds terrible from far away.

Good sound (with the p bass): warm, round sound, not too heavy on the treble, not a total woof though. Mids are present, not scooped. Usually the eq is a little bass boost, even less mid boost, and treble a smudge before noon, or noon. The bad sound is really hard to describe. It seems...

Amp sounds terrible from far away.

Ok. Basses: p bass (vintage fender pickup, slightly dead DR sunbeams roundwound) Jazz bass (vintage Duncan pickups, regular slinkys) Amp: Hughes and Kettner Bassforce XXL. 300 watts solid state power and pre amps, I think 200 with just a 1x15, bt I'm not completely sure. This happens...

Amp sounds terrible from far away.

1x15 cab with or without tweeter, tweeter is very subtle though, barely does anything at all.

Amp sounds terrible from far away.

I have a problem, that I'd think many other people on talkbass have had, and it's probably a very noonish topic, but it's a big problem for me. The problem is, I can dial in a great tone on my amp when I'm standing a few feet from it, at about band practice volume. When I walk across the...

Jazz P/U sounding like this clip ?

I know marlowedk was using his seventies jazz bass, all stock in that clip, not sure of his strings, it no longer says what he uses on his website or YouTube. He was using his TCelectronic rebelhead on that recording. Pretty much any vintage style jazz pickups will get close to that.I wouldn't...

    Troy Sanders of Mastodon

yeah they're all really nice guys, not the "eff you, metal rules the world in your effing face!" kind of guys. agree with everything said abut Sanders on here. On the CTS track The Czar he plays some nice chord stuff in the beginning. Crack The Skye & Big Whiskey And The Groo Grux King...

    Pickbass Stereotype... WHY?!?!?!

Nearly half the people posting on Metallica bass solo vids are flaming noobs, and have no idea what they're talking about. They see that Burton, the "best bass player" doesn't need/use a pick. It's just another way to play the instrument, it doesn't matter what you use to play the instrument...
