I always had a firm belief that the truss rod had a minimum impact to the 14th - 20th frets. I use the bridge saddles to set the actions for those. I use the truss rod to set the actions for the 1st - 12th frets.

tjh is right about loosening the strings before you adjust the truss rod.

My Samsung Galaxy S4 does the same "crackly" sound if I plug it into a mono aux-in. But some cell phones like my friends LG phone can do this with no problems. IPhones can work too.

The size of the solder makes a big difference too. I use the thin silver bearing solder, like "angel hair". The thinner the solder the easier a soldering iron melts it because it transfers the heat faster. The solder joints are cleaner too with thinner solder because there's less waste. Also...
