Club Clement (Part 7: Post your basses here)

New Clement bass that I couldn't be happier with. Sold my Fodera Imperial 6 days after this came in, a bass that I was otherwise extremely happy with for years but it just didn't scratch the itch like this Clement does. Particularly happy with the impeccable neck and fretwork, and how Tom...

How much would you put up with for the perfect sound?

I think it somewhat depends on what your reference is. If you have a specific recording that embodies that sound, then it's an unmoving target unless/until you change your goals, or change your reference listening system. If it's a memory of a performance then there's a soft-target that might...

How much would you put up with for the perfect sound?

Heh. When I was younger, I grew up spending my summers in an exotic automotive shop. The higher end the vehicle, the more likely that there was some ultra-shoddy work done below a well-buffed shine. I would expect that times are different now, but my 2 recent experiences in an upper echelon...

How much would you put up with for the perfect sound?

I expected there to be a divide between primarily gigging and primarily studio musicians, but it's pretty interesting how set the opinions seem to be. When I was primarily a gigging musician, I didn't care about anything except reliability. I played the same Squier P-Bass for about 15 years. A...

How much would you put up with for the perfect sound?

I think that once you receive a product that's not what you expect (assuming reasonable expectations), then you've already begun putting up with the issues. I know how difficult it can be to build an instrument, and how often small mistakes are made then fixed in the process. I can only speak...

How much would you put up with for the perfect sound?

Somewhat topically, there's a point where I lose trust in a builder to provide an adequate solution. If these relatively simple tasks were unable to be carried out, even if it was on the worst day of their career, I've lost significant confidence in their ability to rectify the situation without...

How much would you put up with for the perfect sound?

I originally neglected this purposefully because I did not want to accidentally or implicitly reveal the manufacturer on TB. I had discussed these issues in a manner which might imply the manufacturer on a smaller forum. I've scrubbed that information best I could, so I'll post details of the...

How much would you put up with for the perfect sound?

Title is the question. Spurred by my ownership of a boutique instrument that sounds incredible, but I've experiences numerous issues that I'd normally consider unforgiveable on an instrument of $500, let alone 18x that. But... I put up with it, because in 30 years I've never heard a bass that...

Bass Brands you indirectly choose to ignore

I've played a few of these in shops, and it only takes a couple minutes to adjust (which never ceases to surprise me), but I still have zero interest in them. If Gibson made a fanned fret there'd probably be no instrument on earth that I'd be less interested in.

    New Epifani UL901

I have a full Aguilar DB751 rig, Markbass Classic 300 rig and a new UL901 rig. The UL901 has a low level hiss through the cabinets regardless of the gain/master level, I measured it at about 29dBa at 1m. The UL901's hiss is much lower level than the DB751's fans (ugh!) or the Classic 300's...

New Bartolini 4.7 preamp, noisy popping mid switch

I know this is a necro, but this is the first and only relevant search result for this problem, so I wanted to update this with a solution. Full pocket shims vs Back of pocket shims

No more saddle movement is the situation I'm solving. The neck pocket is slightly sloped inwards (checked with dial indicator relative to body). Tapered shim is the most reasonable fix for this that I'm aware of.

Full pocket shims vs Back of pocket shims

I've always made full pocket shims, because... I've seen 2 older fender bolt-ons with shimstock in the back of the neck pocket that made an indent in the pocket over time. I've seen multiple instruments with 'cave in' between the shim and the sole body/neck joint. Required fret work and left...

"Modern" sounding recommendations for 5-string Jazz

I'm curious why you recommended what appear to be '62 replicas (can't say for sure, their website has been down) when I asked for modern options. I'm not trying to be snippy, I'm legitimately curious about the idea behind the klein recommendation. Thank you everyone so far!

"Modern" sounding recommendations for 5-string Jazz

I have a Fender Elite 5-string, and I love the build and acoustic sound relative to other 5-string Elites I've played. The neck on it is slimmer than other Elite V's and slightly asymmetric. My problem is that the stock noiseless pickups have that hard low-middy fender sound that I'm just not a...

Roscoe Basses and their resale value

Yeah, I'm waiting on another instrument that's coming in. I still might grab that Roscoe, since finding an instrument I like is a relatively rare event (relative to the number that I buy/try). Roscoe Basses and their resale value

So I've been playing this Roscoe SKB Custom at a local shop on/off for a year, always turning away from it because it's rather dark sounding (Bartolini Quads). The instrument has been sitting on the shelf for a good time, while many other similar basses are sold. Yesterday I finally "got it"...

    Losing my dexterity - Coping?

I lose feeling in my fingers. I can be touching something (or cut, or burned, or... whatever) and not be aware of it. I did get by with looking at my plucking hand for a while (took a while to get over the embarrassment as I've been a professional player for 15+ years), and it does help to a...
