    Accurate Speed

EDIT: Turns out my answer was in Octavian's reply. Relax the fingers, kick up the volume and let the electronics do their job. Somewhere along the line I had turned the volume down and I was trying to compensate for it by plucking more firmly. Apparently all I needed to do was twist the volume...

My budget bass is eclipsing my main basses!

If the frets are placed exactly right and the setup is good then every note should be clean and true. If the PU's are decent then the sound to the amp will be strong and clear. A bass that's put together correctly doesn't need to cost a fortune. The hard part's on you, Superman :D

Trouble learning basic music theory as a novice? Frustrated? This might help...

To prevent having the shapes drive what you play instead of what you hear, I'd recommend this: If you can, listen to the tune first. Imagine various lines, hear them in your head. Get one into your head that really grabs you and only then try to create it. You'll find that the shapes will get...

Wow Ed, that's awesome stuff. Here I thought this thread was going to stay at kind of a kindergarden level for those who are trying to figure out the basics of chords and you toss in the kind of thing that someone can use for years and years. :) It kind of reminds me of the sort of thing Victor...

    *******THE LONE WOLF CLUB**********

Add me please. I've never been in a band, not sure I'd want to unless they were up for playing melodic lines and using counter melodies. The vast majority of the time I'm playing the only person who can hear it is me... because I play with headphones on for the way I feel when I play. I don't...

I need a proper bassists opinion :help:

Stuart, It's awesome that you're getting a lot of good ideas and opinions that you can really use in a constructive way! I'm really glad to see that you're coming away with this excited and looking at new possibilites rather than grumbling and feeling insulted. :) One last little bit of...

I need a proper bassists opinion :help:

I think your old teacher wasn't trying to be critical of the things you did do, he was trying to tell you that something was missing. Victor Wooten really pounds on these same points in nearly every workshop I've seen and he really hits on them in his 4 hour groove workshop DVD. Think of...

If you are seeing line break HTML code in my reply it's because I posted this from my tablet. The talk bass app on my tablet seems to insert code no matter how I try to prevent it from doing so. Sorry about that. In step six I'm still referring to the triad. One of the points that I make in...

    A different kind of funk

I don't know how to describe my reaction... FLAVA is a cool tune and has a LOT of potential. However, I kept getting annoyingly distracted by something and it took me a while to figure out what it was. The dynamics of all the instruments, especially the bass, are exactly the same. Attack...

I think it's about time for a new strap

Smogg's got the idea but I did it on the cheap. I have a fat, padded Levi strap that I opened up all the way to make it long, folded up the nylon so there's a z shape in it to eat up a little of the length (you don't need much) and then super glued the nylon to itself so it stayed pressed into...

Thanks for the feedback! Sometimes I don't phrase things as well as I could have and please remember that after four hours of writing that post I had to stop somewhere. First off, the subject says might help, not will help. Hopefully you'll take something good from this, maybe not. Some will, some won't and all I can do is try to let you know what worked for me. I'm not a music teacher though I have studied the art of teaching itself, for other subjects...

Franken Midget V1 built, seeking ideas for V2

Due to a shoulder injury and "Victor Wooten hands" (short fingers) I need to play a 30" scale to prevent injuries. I had a Bronco that had a tone I wasn't thrilled with even after putting in SPB-3's and I had a Squire Jazz body laying around from a failed de-fret. Soooo... My Franken Midget...

Need advice on "protecting an idea"

The documentation that you gave the luthier and any receipt for a deposit you gave him should prove that it was your idea and that you hired him to build it. In this case, he's a contractor hired to build your prototype. If you gave him specs and have proof that you gave them to him, and paid...

I would like to hear basslines like we had in the 80s..

You've expressed one of the most common grumbles on the site, and of bassists in general. Victor Wooten even commented on this in a workshop on Truefire, saying that he thinks the tide is going to turn back that way because bassists are demanding a more active role. I personally go back further...

well that was dumb of me

And here in the OP you seemed like you were afraid people would slam you or something. I love how no one is judgemental, the only real concern being that your don't harm your bass. As long as your instrument won't be ruined, do whatever works for you and makes the magic sounds come out of the amp.

    Pick Or Finger

Post Script... I went and got a few thumb picks today. After only an hour I can flip it out of the way easily and without much of a pause (probably one quarter note), though flipping it back into the same spot on my thumb will take a little practice. It keeps wanting to end up deeper on the...

    A) He's a scammer. B) He's so gullible that a "technician" who is a scammer told him a bunch of bs in order to scam him and he's too ignorant about setups to know any better. Bridge 90 degrees off? So he's saying the strings are wrapping around the body now? What did he do, get into a car...

At what point are you a bassist?

I like to say that I'm not a bassist, I'm a guy who goofs off with a bass. Every one of them has been very complimentary and I think it has a...

well that was dumb of me

I'd be very concerned about the pressure on the neck from cranking the heavy string that tight. The tension has to be a lot more than the neck was meant for, since getting a mid G out of a thick string takes a lot more tension than getting that same note out of a thin string. You may be running...

Question: Exercises to help sloppy fingering when jumping the left hand?

The subject pretty much says it all. There are times when I move my left hand up or down the fingerboard in order to reach a note when: - I finger between strings. - I finger so far above the fret that the note sounds awful. - I finger just below the fret and it kills the whole note or...

    Pick Or Finger

I used to think that having a pick in my hand would hamper my ability to do all the other techniques. I never thought that picks were bad, just that if I had one in my hand then my hand would be "full" with the pick, keeping me from doing other things. Then I saw Mario Cipollina use a thumb...
